LOUISIANA TECH COMPLETES SWEEP OF CAJUNS...April 29, 2001 RUSTON - For the third straight game, Louisiana's Ragin' Cajuns fell behind early and, for the third straight game, they battled back late in the game. However, the result, for the third straight game, was the same. Louisiana Tech completed a three-game sweep of the Cajuns Sunday, holding on for a 6-5 victory at J.C. Love Field.

"There's no doubt you have to compete before the sixth inning," Cajun head coach Tony Robichaux said. "When you're not competitive at the plate, you force yourself to play perfect. You have to give credit to our freshman (Brad) Saloom and (Mike) Kabel, who gave us momentum when we needed it."

The Cajuns (26-22, 10-11 Sun Belt Conference) dropped their third straight one-run game of the weekend and fourth straight SBC decision by one run.

After knocking Louisiana Tech starter Adam Kirkendall from the game in the seventh, the Cajuns put the Bulldog bullpen on the ropes, but could not deliver the knockout blow.

Trailing 6-1 in the seventh, Kabel reached on a two-base error by Bulldog center fielder Dan Preaus. Two batters later, Brad Saloom, whose RBI double in the second inning had given the Cajuns an early 1-0 lead, smacked a single up the middle to cut the lead to four.

After a flyout, Tyler Tiesing drew a walk and Neil Simoneaux delivered a hard single to center to score Saloom. However, Matt Buckle came in and put out the fire.

In the eighth, the Cajuns were at it again against Buckle, who failed to record an out on Friday. Buckle hit Bryan Sneed and Scott Atwood followed with a line-drive double down the left-field line. Kabel followed with a single to center, scoring Sneed and Atwood to cut the lead to one. Buckle used a double-play and Derek Brewster worked around an error to keep the lead at one.

"We've got to pull ourselves out of this," Robichaux said. "It's got to come from inside. That's what leadership is. We need to get our team ready and make sure they realize the importance of this next weekend. It's going to be a hectic week with finals, but it's been a hectic weekend. We need our seniors to step up."

After Saloom had given the Cajuns the early lead, Tech (26-20, 9-11 SBC) responded with a two-run homer from Jake Adams in the second and pushed across two unearned runs in the fourth off Cajun starter Brandt Ray (2-5). Ray worked into the sixth, but Tech padded its lead with two runs, one of which was unearned before the Cajuns woke up at the plate.

The Cajuns will wrap up the four-day, four-game road trip with a single game against Louisiana-Monroe on Monday at 5 p.m. Corey Coles (1-0, 2.38) will take the mound for Louisiana-Lafayette in the game, which was originally scheduled for March 14 but was postponed because of rain.
