BULLDOGS TAKE SECOND STRAIGHT CLOSE GAME FROM CAJUNS...April 29, 2001 RUSTON - Louisiana's Ragin' Cajuns had to battle back from three separate one-run deficits just to have a chance to force extra innings with Louisiana Tech on Saturday afternoon at J.C. Love Field.

However, Craig Montgomery made sure the Cajuns and Bulldogs would not go into overtime, drilling a 3-1 pitch from Jordy Templet over the right-center field wall to break a 4-all tie and give Louisiana Tech a 4-3 victory in the second game of the teams' three-game Sun Belt Conference series.

"That's the way it goes," Cajun head coach Tony Robichaux said. "We wait until the sixth inning to score. Eric (Templet) gave us every chance to win. We just have to get going earlier. Jordy came in and minimized the damage. He just made a pitch the guy got his bat on. We didn't give ourselves enough leeway for a solo home run."

The Cajuns (26-21, 10-10 SBC) were all but dead after Tech's Casey Blalock (5-2) retired the first two hitters of the ninth inning. However, Brad Saloom lined a 2-2 single to center. Pinch runner Chad Verret then stole second before freshman catcher Mike Kabel grounded a single through the left side of the infield to tie the game. Two innings earlier, Kabel had tied the game at 3 with a solo home run.

"He's going to continue to mature and grow up and we'll have a guy that will hit for us," Robichaux said. "We needed a little more punch and he gave us some of that. We've just got to put something together all game."

Eric Templet matched Blalock pitch-for-pitch through the seventh before giving way to Jordy Templet with runners on first and second and one out. Eric Templet tossed 6 1/3 innings, allowed three runs and struck out eight but did not figure in the decision.

Jordy Templet worked out the seventh-inning jam, inducing a ground out and a pop out. However, Darrin Uptigrove delivered a pinch-hit RBI single in the eighth to again give Tech (25-20, 8-11 SBC) a one-run lead.

The series concludes Sunday with a 1 p.m. matinee. Brandt Ray (2-4) will take the mound for the Cajuns while Tech has yet to name its Sunday starter.
