COLES PITCHES CAJUNS PAST NICHOLLS STATE...April 25, 2001

LAFAYETTE – There are two schools of though for pitchers when making their first start. One is to be nervous and let the nerves dictate their performance. The second is to make the start just like any other appearance.

After Wednesday night, it is apparent that Louisiana's Ragin' Cajun freshman left-hander Corey Coles subscribes to the latter school.

In his first collegiate start, Coles tossed 7 2/3 innings of one-run ball and his offensive mates came through with a three-run sixth inning as Louisiana-Lafayette scored a 5-1 victory over the Colonels at M.L. "Tigue" Moore Field.

"I wasn't nervous," Coles said. "I was nervous in my first appearance (Feb. 3 against Texas-San Antonio), but since then I've been fine. I got in a good rhythm and got some good defensive plays behind me."

Coles limited the Colonels (24-24) to three hits over his time, but Mike Prejean (4-2) was equally effective against the Cajun bats over the first five innings.

Prejean, who allowed 10 hits in six innings against Louisiana-Lafayette in the Colonels' 3-2, 10-inning victory April 3 in Thibodaux, matched Coles pitch-for-pitch through five innings but ran into major trouble in the sixth.

With one out, Neil Simoneaux ripped a double to right field and scored when Rick Haydel delivered a single to left. Haydel stole second and reached third on a wild pitch and scored when Robert Shelton shot an RBI single through the right side of the infield.

Two batters later, Brad Saloom gave the Cajuns (26-19) a 4-1 lead on a single to right.

Coles, meanwhile, allowed only an unearned run in the fourth that tied the game at 1. However, even the play that scored the run worked to his benefit.

The Colonels had runners on first and third with no outs, but Coles induced a double-play grounder off the bat of Jason Wilkerson and struck out Monte Mitchell to end the Nicholls State threat.

"Up there (in Thibodaux) we weren't playing as well as we are now," Cajun head coach Tony Robichaux said. "Our freshman did a good job on the mound. (Coles) gave us a chance to face the guy more than once and figure him out. That's the key to pitching: Give your hitters a chance to have more than one at-bat against a guy."

Coles finally ran out of steam in the eighth, but fellow freshman Jordy Templet stepped in and worked a scoreless 1 1/3 innings to earn his second save. Templet has now saved the two most recent Cajun victories.

The Cajuns, who played their last mid-week home game of the season, return to Sun Belt Conference action on Friday when they travel to Ruston for a 6:30 contest with Louisiana Tech. That game is the first of four games in four days for the Cajuns, who also play at Louisiana-Monroe on Monday at 5 p.m.
