CAJUNS' SWEEP BID FALLS SHORT AT UNO...April 22, 2001

NEW ORLEANS – For whatever reason, Louisiana's Ragin' Cajuns hit the ball long enough at Privateer Park until the end of close games.

Last season, the Cajuns dropped a one-run game when a fly ball died at the base of the left-field wall. On Sunday, Louisiana-Lafayette fell to UNO 3-2 when Scott Atwood's drive died on the warning track in left-center field.

"We hit a lot of balls hard and a lot of balls deep," said Cajun head coach Tony Robichaux. "What happens off a change-up pitcher is that it gets you out of your legs and you hit a lot of long fly balls, almost like a mirror image of Andy Gros. You have a 50-50 chance and you've got to sit on something, stay back and drive it."

Gros certainly did his job in relief, tossing four innings of one-hit ball while striking out four after coming on for Brandt Ray (2-4) in the fifth.

"He's starting to get him in a good rhythm," Robichaux said of Gros, who worked six innings over the weekend and allowed only two hits. "If we can keep getting him in behind hard throwers like that, he's so much more effective. Pitching-wise, we set it up well. We just couldn't score enough."

It appeared that Sunday's game would be what had become business as usual for the Cajuns on the lakefront.

Rick Haydel smacked a 2-1 offering from Lipari (6-5) over the left-field wall to give the Cajuns (25-19, 10-8) a 1-0 lead for the third straight game. However, New Orleans (19-22, 10-8) wasted little time responding.

Donnie Bollich drew a leadoff walk, stole second and advanced to third when the throw sailed into center field. Two batters later, J.D. Huether lofted a sacrifice fly to right field to knot the game at 1. The run was the seventh unearned run of the series that the Cajuns surrendered.

The Privateers then added single runs in the second on an RBI double by Mike Sanchez and in the third on Huether's solo home run and Lipari made it stand.

The Cajuns cut into the lead in the fifth when Jarvis Larry slammed his third home run of the series, this one a solo shot to left. Lipari settled in though and allowed only a leadoff single to Scott Atwood in the eighth the rest of the way to spoil the Cajuns' bid to sweep the Privateers in UNO for the first time.

"You've got to tip your cap to him," Robichaux said. "We got all our offense on two home runs. We held them to three, which shouldn't be enough to win the game. But, he was better than we were at the plate today"

Louisiana-Lafayette briefly returns home to M.L. "Tigue" Moore Field for a Wednesday non-conference game against Nicholls State at 7 p.m.
