LSU ROLLS PAST CAJUNS...April 10, 2001

METAIRIE – LSU's Ryan Theriot tied a career high with four RBIs, including a bases-clearing triple, and the Tigers pounded out 13 hits as No. 2 LSU (25-9-1) held off a late rally by Louisiana's Ragin' Cajuns for a 12-7 victory at Zephyr Field Tuesday night. Trailing 7-1 entering the seventh, Louisiana-Lafayette (21-17) put together its best inning of the night against LSU starter Tim Nugent (3-1). Roberts Shelton and Doug Vicknair led off with back-to-back walks which drove Nugent from the game. Matt Pavlich then greeted reliever Justin Hill with a single through the right side of the infield that scored Shelton. Hill issued a walk to Jarvis Larry to load the bases before leaving in favor of Brad David.

Neil Simoneaux welcomed David with an RBI fielder's choice before David escaped further damage with a strikeout and a ground out. Then, Theriot, with two outs in the LSU half of the seventh, effectively ended any chance of a Cajun comeback by lining a triple to the left-center field gap of Corey Coles that gave the Tigers an 11-3 lead. Theriot's shot, though, was the only mistake the Lafayette native made on the mound.

In four innings of work, Coles scattered three hits, struck out four and did not allow an earned run. After LSU pushed across another run in the eighth, the Cajuns made one last-ditch comeback attempt against reliever Billy Brian.

Larry led off the frame with a towering double to right-center and Simoneaux reached on an error by Victor Brumfield. Brian then uncorked a wild pitch that scored Larry. After striking out a pair of Cajuns, Brian again found the Cajun bats as Scott Atwood delivered an RBI single. Jess Poche followed with an RBI double to the left-center gap and scored on Robert Shelton's RBI single to center for the final margin. The Cajuns return home to face Sun Belt Conference rival South Alabama on Friday at 7 p.m. at M.L. "Tigue" Moore Field.
