BASEBALL POUNDS HOUSTON BAPTIST...March 9, 2001

LAFAYETTE – Tim Ramon was not as sharp as he had been in his two most recent starts, but, with the way Louisiana's Ragin' Cajuns swung the bats Friday night, it did not matter.

The Cajuns pounded out 16 hits and combined those with four errors by visiting Houston Baptist as they rolled to an easy 17-1 victory over the Huskies at M.L. "Tigue" Moore Field en route to its fifth-straight victory.

"Tim didn't have his best stuff, but he worked his way through it," Robichaux said. "We've swung the bats well and we were able to break it open, but the key was that the guys coming off the bench swung the bats well. It's going to take us all to get this done. We can bring a lot of power out of the dugout."

The final numbers proved Robichaux's point: Seven hits from players that did not start Friday's game and a pair of home runs from reserves as well.

However, the Cajuns (13-7) also took advantage of the porous Husky defense, turning four errors and a passed ball into seven unearned runs as they improved to 13-3 at Moore Field on the season.

The Cajun lineup used plenty of balance instead of relying on one hero. Five Cajuns collected two hits and four others had multi-RBI games.

Neil Simoneaux led the way for the Cajuns with two hits and three RBIs and freshman Mike Kabel entered the game off the bench and contributed a pair of hits and two RBIs, both of which came on his first collegiate home run. Simoneaux, who is 12-for-19 in his last five games, now has an eight-game hitting streak, one off his career-best.

Robichaux is a believer in the live and die by the big inning theory and there were plenty of big innings for the Cajuns on Friday. The Cajuns used innings of three, four and five runs to back another solid outing by Ramon (3-0).

The Robstown, Texas, native scattered four hits and allowed only a second-inning run as he won his third-straight start. An RBI single by Houston Baptist's T.J. Maldonado was all the Huskies could muster against Ramon, though the run-scoring hit broke the junior's 17.2-inning scoreless streak.

The series concludes Saturday with a 1 p.m. doubleheader. Louisiana-Lafayette will send two Templets to the mound in hopes of picking up back-to-back series sweeps after sweeping Siena last weekend.

Freshman Jordy Templet (2-0, 0.55) takes the mound in the opener and senior Eric Templet (3-2, 3.91) will follow in the nightcap.
