SUBSTITUTIONS KEY RALLY FOR CAJUN VICTORY...March 18, 2001 BOWLING GREEN, Ky. - It took long enough but when Louisiana's Ragin' Cajuns' offense started rolling, there was no way Western Kentucky's suspect bullpen could do about it. Keyed by a qunitet of sixth-inning substitutions, Louisiana-Lafayette rallied from a 4-0 deficit for a 7-5 victory Sunday afternoon at Nick Denes Field. After Brian Houdek no-hit the Cajuns for 6.1 innings, Louisiana-Lafayette (17-8, 2-1) fought back with a rally that began on an infield single by Jarvis Larry, who entered the game hitting .167. Larry's nubber started a deluge of four hits in five at-bats that led to four Cajun runs and a 4-4 tie. "The biggest thing early in the game was we had a chance to get two runs across," head coach Tony Robichaux said. "Houdek had done a good job changing speeds so we decided to dump the bench and those guys did a great job." Western Kentucky (14-7, 1-2) fought back with a single run in their half of the eighth to take a 5-4 lead into the ninth, but Chad Verret, who entered the game for Kevin Preau in the sixth, drilled a go-ahead, two-run double that gave the Cajuns a 6-5 lead they would not relinquish. Verret finished his day with a pair of hits in as many at-bats and knocked home a career-high three runs. "We felt that we could get to somebody else's fastball after we got rid of Houdek," Robichaux said. "We've got to learn to get into someone's bullpen before Sunday. When we were in the first and third (in the eighth), I told the guys we could get to the next two guys fastballs and that if we got one run we could still win." In the ninth, Robert Shelton led off with a sharp single to center and Scott Atwood followed with an infield single to shortstop. Mike Kabel, who knocked home the first of the four Cajun runs in the seventh, sacrificed the runners ahead before Verret laced a Kevin Sadowski fastball to the base of the centerfield wall. Gordon O'Brien, who saved the Cajuns' 5-3 series-opening victory, picked up his the victory after entering the game in the eighth inning with runners on first and third and one out in the eighth. O'Brien allowed an RBI single to Tim Cleland that broke the 4-4 tie. However, O'Brien struck out Sadowski and Luis Rodriguez to end the threat and set up the ninth-inning heroics. O'Brien (3-1) ran into trouble in the ninth, but his teammates helped him escape. After walking pinch-hitter Jeff Pacholke, O'Brien induced a grounder off the bat of Matt Fox that Brad Saloom, who delivered a game-tying two-run double in the seventh, smothered with a dive and threw out Fox. After Houdek reached on an error, O'Brien froze D.J. Johnson with a patented outside corner curve ball before Nick Turner lined out to Shelton at third to end it. The Cajuns return to action Wednesday at 7 p.m. against Louisiana-Monroe at M.L. "Tigue" Moore Field.
