BICONDOA, HILLTOPPERS BLANK CAJUNS...March 17, 2001
BOWLING GREEN, Ky. - For the second straight game, Western Kentucky was
in a giving mood. However, Hilltopper right-hander Ryan Bicondoa made sure Louisiana's
Ragin' Cajuns could not take advantage.
The junior scattered five hits and, despite committing three errors for
the second consecutive game, the Hilltoppers were able to take advantage of a gusting wind
as they snapped Louisiana-Lafayette's eight-game winning streak with a 5-0 victory at Nick
Denes Field Saturday afternoon.
"On a day like today, you (as a pitching coach) want to see a guy
who stays at three-quarters with some good run-in," Cajun head coach Tony Robichaux
said. "He did a great job. He threw the ball well. We've got to do a better job of
scoring first."
Louisiana-Lafayette (16-8, 1-1 Sun Belt Conference) had its chances
early, as Bicondoa (4-2) hit Chase Bundy with the game's first pitch and moved Bundy to
second on a wild pickoff attempt.
However, Bundy was erased on a fielder's choice at third when Bicondoa
induced a comebacker on Bryan Sneed's attempted sacrifice bunt.
"We were able to score first (Friday) night and we won because of
that," Robichaux said. "Today, we had our opportunity and we didn't move the
runner up and we didn't take pressure off ourselves by getting a run early. We failed to
do that and they pushed some runs in that inning where we made some bad 1-2 and 0-2
pitches. If we score early, that changes the complexion of the game."
Two of those fourth-inning pitches proved to be the difference in the
game.
After cruising through the first 3.1 innings of the game, Cajun starter
Eric Templet (3-3) ran into trouble. A pair of bloop singles from D.J. Johnson and Nick
Turner put runners at first and second with one out. Ryan Cattell then delivered a two run
double to left and, two batters later, Tim Cleland took advantage of the stiff wind
blowing out to left, clubbing a three-run home run to provide the Hilltoppers (14-6, 1-1
SBC) with a 5-0 lead.
Despite the wind, the Cajuns were unable to take advantage, as Bicondoa
recorded only one fly ball out.
"On a day like today, you (as hitters) like to see a guy that's
coming over the top that pitches up so you can get underneath the baseball,"
Robichaux said. "They threw the right guy today. The only thing we could do was keep
it hot on the carpet. We never could break it open. He just did a great job of pitching
today."
Bicondoa struck out eight and did not allow the Cajuns more than one
hit in any inning and minimized the damage by staying ahead of Louisiana-Lafayette
hitters. In addition, only one Cajun hit came with less than two outs.
The series concludes Sunday as Brandt Ray (2-1, 1.16) takes the mound
for the Cajuns in the 1 p.m. series finale.
