CAJUN BASEBALL SHUTOUT AT FIU ... April 7, 2000

HOMESTEAD, Fla. - Florida International pitcher Jerry Courtney allowed only four hits and struck out five in shutting out Louisiana's Ragin' Cajuns for the first time this season during a 5-0 win at the Homestead Sports Complex on Friday.

Courtney posted his first shutout of the season after scattering five Cajuns hits in the game and did not allow a Louisiana-Lafayette runner to third base in the game. He struck out five and retired 15 of 17 batters during one stretch in upping his record to 7-2 this season.

"Anytime a pitcher drops down, it changes the window for hitters. He threw a really good ball game, and they played inspired," head coach Tony Robichaux said. "We have to toughen up at the plate and get the ball down. When we can't run the bases, teams can beat us."

Meanwhile, Cajun starter Scott Dohmann struggled in seeing his season-opening nine-game winning streak come to an end. The Lafayette native allowed a season-high five runs and 10 hits in 6.2 innings and dropped to 9-1 with the loss.

The fourth-ranked Cajuns (29-3, 11-2 SBC) saw their seven-game winning streak come to an end and lost for only the second time in their last 26 games. It was also the first time they were shutout since Western Kentucky posted a 6-0 win over the Cajuns in the 1999 Sun Belt Conference Tournament on May 21, 1999, a span of 37 games.

"I'm glad we got kicked in the teeth tonight," Robichaux said. "Now we will see what we are made of."

FIU (25-9, 5-5 SBC) jumped ahead in the second inning when Michael Quintana blasted his second home run of the year - a solo shot - to right field.

One inning later, Tino Burgos led off the third with his first home run of the year. Matthew Huntingford then walked and moved to second Barry Paulk's walk. After Eric Miller's sacrifice bunt placed runners on second and third,

Cajun catcher Danny Massiatte attempted to pick off Huntingford at third base, but his throw went off the glove of third baseman Nathan Nelson, allowing both runners to move up and give FIU a 3-0 lead.

In the seventh inning, FIU led off with three straight hits and plated their first run in the frame when Barry Paulk's double to right field scored Burgos who led off with a single. Miller then lifted a sacrifice fly to score Huntingford and give FIU a 5-0 lead.

In the eighth, the Golden Panthers padded that lead. Burgos reached on a single and moved all the way to third base on a failed pickoff attempt before scoring on Paulk's single through the right side.

The two teams continue the series on Saturday with a noon (CST) game at the Homestead Sports Complex.
