TEMPLET THROWS GEM AS CAJUNS ROLL OVER LAMAR ... April 26, 2000

LAFAYETTE – Louisiana-Lafayette right-hander Eric Templet had one of his best performances as a Cajun Wednesday night in leading his 20th ranked squad to a 6-0 victory over visiting Lamar (27-24) at Tigue Moore Field.

Templet (7-2), a junior from Gonzales, threw a complete-game three-hitter. He struck out eight Cardinals and walked just one, picking up his first win in five outings. The effort lowered his ERA to 3.62 overall, as the Cajuns now have no pitcher with an earned run average over 3.66.

The East Ascension grad got plenty of help offensively from leadoff hitter Jarvis Larry. The left fielder went 3-for-4 with two RBIs. Larry was one of three Cajuns who enjoyed multiple-hit nights. Tommy Clark went 2-for-4 with an RBI, while Steven Feehan went 2-for-3 with a triple.

"This was a big win for Eric and for us," said Cajun head coach Tony Robichaux, whose team won its 34th consecutive contest at home dating back to last year. "He showed what you can do when you get the curve ball over for strikes."

The Cajuns (34-11) quickly got to Lamar starter J.P. Igo (2-1). In the second inning, Nathan Nelson led off with a single and stole second. After Clark singled through the left side, designated hitter Jess Poche drove Nelson in on a sacrifice fly to right. The advantage climbed to 2-0 in the third, thanks to an RBI single by Larry. Feehan scored after leading off the inning with a single and advancing to second on a wild pitch.

The Feehan-Larry tandem produced another run in the fifth. Feehan recorded a one-out triple to right-center field and was plated on Larry's single to right three pitches later. The Cajuns added two insurance runs in the sixth and another in the seventh to provide the final margin.

The win gives the Cajuns a 24-0 mark at home this year. Despite the team's minsicule team ERA, which was at 2.75 entering Wednesday's contest, it was only the second shutout hurled by a Cajun this season. Justin Gabriel shut out Conference USA leader Southern Mississippi on Feb. 20.

Louisiana-Lafayette will be back at home this weekend, hosting Louisiana Tech in a three-game Sun Belt Conference series beginning at 7 p.m. Friday night.
