CAJUN FALL AT SIXTH-RANKED LSU ... April 11, 2000

BATON ROUGE, La. -- The LSU Tigers were expected to hit the ball well on Tuesday. Combining that with a solid pitching performance from Bo Pettit equaled an 8-2 defeat for Louisiana's Ragin' Cajuns, their third loss in their last four games.

The Tigers got two home runs apiece from Brad Cresse and Ryan Jorgensen and another from Blair Barbier while Pettit pitched five innings, scattering five hits and allowing only two earned runs while striking out five.

The Cajuns struck early when Nathan Nelson singled and scored on will Hawkins double. Tommy Clark brought Hawkins home with a single to give the Cajuns a 2-0 lead.

But the Tigers took the lead in a hurry when Brad Cresse launched a two-run bomb to knot the game at two. Blair Barbier also took freshman Andy Gros deep for a 3-2 Tiger lead heading into the second inning.

The Cajuns wasted an opportunity in the second when Brett Bailey led off with a single but Jess Poche was robbed by a diving catch by Cedric Harris in center and Neil Simoneaux popped up to center.

Ryan Jorgensen led off the second with a home run to left to give the Tigers a 4-2 lead, chasing Gros. LSU continued swinging the bats in the third as Cresse led off with his second homer of the game, and his 17th of the season, this time off of Eric Templet. Cedric Harris reached on a fielder's choice, stole second and scored on a Jeremy Witten single to give LSU a 6-2 lead.

Ray Wright led off the fourth by advancing to second base on an error by Nathan Nelson and scored on Ryan Theriot's double. Jorgensen led off the sixth with a solo shot to give the Tigers their final run of the game.

Gros lasted only 1 1/3 innings and gave up four runs on five hits. Ryan Gill was the only Cajun with two hits as UL managed only six hits as a team.
