CAJUNS SWEEP DOUBLEHEADER FROM ARKANSAS STATE
... April 1, 2000
LAFAYETTE - Louisiana's Ragin' Cajun
baseball team had played only one scheduled doubleheader prior to Saturday's twinbill with
Sun Belt Conference foe Arkansas State at M.L. "Tigue" Moore Field. However, the
Cajuns hardly looked like newcomers to double dips.
The conference-leading
Cajuns swept the visiting Indians and opened up a 3 1/2 game lead on second place New
Orleans, who dropped a 5-4 decision at Arkansas-Little Rock. UL Lafayette held on for a
5-2 victory in the opener, before taking an 11-3 win in the nightcap.
In the opener, Scott
Dohmann improved to 9-0 after tossing eight innings of two-run ball. Despite allowing a
first-inning run, Dohmann benefitted from plenty of offensive support from his teammates.
The Cajuns (27-2, 10-1)
took advantage of a hit batter and an Indian error and pushed four runs across the plate
in the third inning to take a lead they never would relinquish. Two runs scored when ASU
second baseman Darrin Hope uncorked a wild throw to first while attempting to turn a
double play. Tommy Clark delivered an RBI double and Danny Massiatte's single plated Clark
with the final Cajun run of the inning.
Clark then added an
insurance run with another RBI double in the fifth and Dohmann avoided any major damage in
the sixth to close out the Indians (15-12, 4-6). After issuing one of his season-high
three walks to Reed Bredensteiner, Dohmann surrendered an RBI double to Kent Brunen.
Brunen advanced to third when Dohmann attempted to turn Ryan Corrigan's line drive into a
double play. However, Dohmann whiffed Ryan Reynolds and induced a line drive to rightfield
by Kory Doan to end the ASU threat.
"I knew I had to get
ahead," Dohmann said. "I failed to do that in some innings. I had to establish
myself."
Despite having an extra
day to prepare - Dohmann has started all of his games except for the season opener on
Fridays - he allowed seven hits in eight innings, including two hits apiece in the first
and fourth innings. The hits led to a run in the first, but Dohmann forced the Indians
into leaving the bases loaded in the fourth without allowing a run.
"I don't think that
had anything to do with it," said Dohmann, who now needs only two wins to tie Phil
Devey for the all-time school record of 24. "If anything, it should have made me
fresher."
In the nightcap, the
Indians again struck early, pushing a couple of unearned runs across against Justin
Gabriel, the Sun Belt leader in ERA. However, Gabriel (6-0) never lost his composure and
limited the Indians to only five hits and one unearned run in tossing his first complete
game in a Cajun uniform.
"It's a little
different (pitching the second game of a doubleheader)," said Gabriel, who previously
had made all his starts on Sundays. "You have to sit and watch. But, you have to come
out and compete every time."
The Cajuns, however,
roared back and scored 11 unanswered runs before ASU pushed across a single run in the
seventh inning.
Will Hawkins laced a
bases-loaded double in the to push the Cajun lead to 8-2 and Rick Haydel added a
bases-clearing triple in the sixth inning, as all but one Cajun starter had at least one
hit. Ryan Gill chipped in three hits and three runs and Danny Massiatte reached base for
the 11th straight time with a second inning walk. Before flying out to deep centerfield in
the third inning, Massiatte had not been kept off base since being called out on strikes
against Tulane on Wednesday.
"They pushed two
across early," said Cajun head coach Tony Robichaux. "Then, we came back and
answered. Every game has a play that breaks the other team's will to win. Will did that
for us and then Rick did it later. We scored some runs going away, which is what you want
to do in a seven-inning game."
The series concludes today
with a single game at 1 p.m.
