CAJUN BASEBALL ROLLS PAST GREEN WAVE ... March 29, 2000 NEW ORLEANS -- Louisiana's Ragin' Cajuns rapped out a season-high 17 hits and took advantage of a solid pitching performance from Andy Gros to roll past Tulane 12-1 at Turchin Stadium on Wednesday.

All but one Cajun starter recorded at least one hit in the contest with Steven Feehan, Will Hawkins and Bret Bailey each rapping out three hits on the way to the Cajuns' biggest win over Tulane in six years.

Meanwhile, the Cajuns saw another solid pitching performance from Gros, who was making only his second collegiate start. He collected his second straight victory by scattering four hits with four strikeouts in six innings of work and retired 10 of 11 batters at one stretch.

""You have to give Andy credit,'' head coach Tony Robichaux said. ""He made the big pitch when he had to and I think he gave some hitters some energy when they saw our freshman bend but not break.''

The sixth-ranked Cajuns (24-2) have now won 19 of their last 20 games and snapped a three-game losing skid to the Green Wave in New Orleans.

Tulane jumped ahead in the first inning with a run on Jake Gautreau's RBI-double. The Green Wave continued to threaten in the inning with runners on second and third and only one out, but Gros forced a groundout and a strikeout to end the threat.

However, Louisiana-Lafayette took the lead in the third inning with three runs on the scoreboard. After back-to-back hits by Feehan and Ryan Gill, Scott Atwood plated Feehan with a sacrifice fly to center field. One batter later, Hawkins cleared the bases with a two-run home run to deep center field, his fifth of the season.

The Cajuns extended their lead in the next inning with two more runs. Rick Haydel's single to left scored Bailey, who led off the frame with a single and moved into scoring position on a wild pickoff attempt by Tulane hurler Matt Foster.

Haydel later scored in the inning Tulane shortstop James Jurries' throw on a double play attempt pulled first baseman Mickey McKee off the bag.

In the sixth, the Cajuns scored two more runs, thanks to RBI singles by Bailey and Feehan, and added added three more runs in the seventh, with Bailey's two-out, two-RBI single highlighting the frame. Not content, Louisiana-Lafayette added single run in the eighth and ninth innings for the final margin of victory.

The Cajuns return to action on Thursday when they host Louisiana-Monroe in a 7 p.m. game at M.L. "Tigue" Moore Field. That contest was originally scheduled for March 15 but postponed then due to rain.

Nick Webb is scheduled to start on the hill for the Cajuns. The Howard JC product is 2-1 this season with a 2.81 ERA and 14 strikeouts in 16.0 innings of work.
