DOHMANN STAYS PERFECT 3-0 IN CAJUNS' BASEBALL WIN OVER USM...Feb. 18, 2000

LAFAYETTE -- Louisiana's Ragin Cajuns picked up a win over Southern Mississippi under the leadership of junior right-hander Scott Dohmann's nine inning, one-run performance, which carried him to a perfect 3-0 record in non-conference play at M.L. "Tigue" Moore Field.

Dohmann went the distance for the Cajuns, striking out seven and only giving up three Golden Eagle hits en route to the Cajuns' 4-1 win.

"I knew what my job was, and its time to prove that I'm not an inexperienced pitcher anymore," Dohmann said. "I wanted to step up and be the pitcher I should be, and not take any steps back. I just trusted in my hitters to come through for me in the end."

Senior center fielder Steven Feehan also had an exceptional night, going 2-for-4 with one RBI for the Cajun offense.

The Cajuns struggled during the first half of the game, as they were blanked by Golden Eagles' right handed hurler Colby Calcote who was relieved by Scott Smith in the bottom of the seventh after Calcote gave up three runs in the seventh.

"We were trying to play the short game because we felt that we could get back on top Dohmann would have them," head coach Tony Robichaux said.

In the seventh sophomore Jess Poche, freshman Neil Simoneaux and junior Rick Haydel all crossed the plate for the Cajuns in the seventh inning off of hits by Danny Massiatte and Steven Feehan and a sacrafice fly given to the Cajuns courtesy of senior Ryan Gill.

The Golden Eagles lit up the scoreboard first in the top of the fourth when Josh Hoffpauir reached base on an error by senior left fielder Will Hawkins, and was eventually plated by the Eagles Dustin Haley.

That was the only run that Dohmann and the Cajuns' defense would allow, as Dohmann cruised to the ninth striking out six more after the fourth inning.

"A few of their balls jumped off the bat, but the wind tonight and the heavy air it stayed down," Robichaux said. "But, they're a good club, I just think that you have to give credit to how well Scotty pitched."

The Cajuns will continue their series against Southern Mississippi on Saturday at 1 p.m. at M.L. "Tigue" Moore Field. The starting pitcher for the Cajuns will be junior right hander Eric Templet who is currently 2-0 on the season.
