Since joining the Louisiana Ragin’ Cajuns men’s basketball staff two seasons ago, Gus Hauser has been an integral part of a Sun Belt Championship, two post season appearances and the most wins in a two-year span (45) since 1982-84. With a 22-14 record in 2014-15, Hauser helped coach the Ragin’ Cajuns to the quarterfinals of the CollegeInsider.com Tournament. Led by Shawn Long, a first-team all-Sun Belt Conference selection, Lou Henson All-American and 2015 member of the U.S. Pan American men’s basketball team, the Ragin’ Cajuns averaged 77.5 points per game to rank 16th among all NCAA Division I programs.
In Hauser’s first season on the Louisiana staff, the Ragin’ Cajuns claimed the Sun Belt Conference Tournament title and advanced to the NCAA Tournament for the first time since 2000. The team’s 23 wins during the 2013-14 campaign were the most since the 1999-2000 season. The breakthrough season also included junior Elfrid Payton's selection in the 2014 NBA Draft, going 10th overall to the Philadelphia 76ers before being traded to the Orlando Magic.
During Hauser’s 12 years at the Division I level, he has been a part of eight postseason appearances (four NCAA Tournaments, two NIT appearances, one CBI appearance and one CIT appearance) and has an overall record as an assistant of 247-151.
PRIOR TO LOUISIANA
Most recently he served as associate head coach at Wofford College. Hauser helped guide the Terriers to wins over Wake Forest and Xavier as well as a second-place finish in the Southern Conference. While in Spartanburg, he coached a First Team Academic All-American and two All-Southern Conference performers.
Prior to Wofford, Hauser spent two seasons on the staff at Coastal Carolina University as the assistant head coach. During the 2010 and 2011 seasons, the Chanticleers won back-to-back Big South Conference titles, made two trips to the NIT and set school and conference records for most wins in a season (28). While in Conway, he coached three All-Big South selections.
Before his tenure at CCU, he spent two seasons at ULM. While at ULM, Hauser helped the Warhawks to their first in-season tournament championship in 15 years and an upset of Iowa. Prior to his arrival in Monroe, he had a successful two-year run at New Mexico State University, coaching on former NBA all-star Reggie Theus’ staff. Their first year on the job, NMSU posted a 10-game win improvement from the previous year. NMSU finished with a 25-9 record in Hauser’s second season, claiming the Western Athletic Conference Tournament Championship and making the NCAA tournament.
Hall of Fame Coach Rick Pitino gave Hauser his break into Division I coaching at the University of Louisville in 2003. While at Louisville, he helped the Cardinals advance to back-to-back NCAA Tournaments and the 2005 NCAA Final Four. During his time at Louisville, he was very involved with recruiting, opponent scouting and player skill development with players including NBA First Round Draft selection Francisco Garcia. To this day, Pitino calls Hauser “humble, passionate and hard working” and refers to his relentless persistence in his recent book, The One-Day Contract.
Before joining Pitino at Louisville, Hauser spent one season as an assistant coach at Transylvania University in Lexington, Ky.
