Strong Finish in Hammond Sends Ragin’ Cajuns Home With a Win

Louisiana fights off set point in the second, dominates Southeastern final two frames
HAMMOND – The Louisiana Ragin' Cajuns Volleyball team fought off set point in the second set to even the match, then powered through the final two frames to defeat Southeastern 3-1 (20-25, 27-25, 25-12, 25-17) on Tuesday, September 15 at the University Center in Hammond.
Lolo Lambert delivered a match-high 19 kills as Louisiana (4-6) swept the season series with Southeastern (3-7) and completed a five-match road trip. The Ragin' Cajuns used a commanding 28-13 advantage in kills over the final two sets to put away the Lions for the second time in 13 days (won 3-1 on Sept. 3 at E.K. Long).
As the contest wore on, the Ragin' Cajuns picked up the intensity to distance themselves from the Lions. UL posted a .349 percentage over Sets 3 and 4 combined compared to SLU's -.018 clip.
The Ragin' Cajuns continually fed off the momentum of stopping the Lions from grabbing a 2-0 match lead, reeling off several scoring runs down the stretch including a key 7-0 spurt in each of the final two sets.
Louisiana finished with 56 kills and a .250 hitting percentage while limiting SLU to 42 kills on .110 hitting. The Ragin' Cajuns also held advantages in digs (63-51), aces (8-2) and blocks (10-7).
Lambert hit .333 and added 12 digs, leading five Cajuns with at least six kills. Harley Krause and Marlee Ervin supplied nine kills apiece, Emily Williams added seven and Taylor Gaines contributed six.
Williams led the front-row defense with six blocks, and Gaines added five. Louisiana reached double-digit blocks for the sixth time and either out-blocked or matched its opponent for the eighth time in 10 matches.
Kennedy Gustafson collected a match-high 19 digs as she crept within 29 digs of the 1,000-career digs mark. Rhyan Miciotto posted a double-double with 25 assists and 12 digs, while Ryleigh Garis added 17 assists. Lambert, Sophia Armstrong and Gustafson each served two aces.
HOW IT HAPPENED
After dropping the opening set, Louisiana faced a potential two-set deficit when Southeastern moved ahead 25-24 in the second. Williams answered with a kill to erase set point, Armstrong followed with another kill and an SLU attack error completed the Cajuns' three-point rally.
UL made its first move to overtaking the Lions in Set 3, opening an 8-7 lead with seven consecutive points. Miciotto served during the decisive surge, which included an ace and kills from Lambert and Krause. The Cajuns hit .462 with 14 kills and only two attack errors while holding SLU to a negative-.120 mark.
Southeastern jumped ahead 6-1 in the fourth, but Louisiana rallied once again.
Trailing 11-8, the Ragin' Cajuns scored seven straight points to complete the rally, with Gustafson delivering consecutive aces during the run to extend the lead to 14-11. Louisiana later claimed the final five points of the contest, capped by back-to-back Williams kills.

Louisiana returns home to E.K. Long Gym for the Ragin' Cajuns Classic from Thursday-Saturday, September 17-19. The Ragin' Cajuns kick off the tournament with a 6:00 p.m. showdown with Mississippi State on Thursday (Sept. 17) – the first visit by an SEC squad to E.K. Long since MSU's last visit in 2006.
The Ragin' Cajuns then face UT Arlington at 6:00 p.m. on Friday (Sept. 18) and Jackson State on Saturday (Sept. 19) at 2:00 p.m. to round out the weekend tournament in the Hub City.
