Louisiana looks to regroup Friday with postseason positioning still within reach
MOBILE, Ala. – The Louisiana Ragin' Cajuns Softball team's offense was held in check in the opening game of its final regular-season series on Thursday, April 30 at Jaguar Field in Mobile, Alabama, dropping a 4-0 decision to South Alabama.
The Ragin' Cajuns (27-25, 10-12 SBC) were unable to generate sustained offense against Jaguars pitcher Ryley Harrison, who tossed a complete-game, two-hit shutout. Louisiana managed only one extra-base hit and placed just four runners on base with none advancing past second.
The contest was scoreless after the opening inning before South Alabama (28-24, 12-10 SBC) broke through in the second and steadily added to its lead.
UL's pitching staff kept the game within reach early, but the Jaguars capitalized on timely hitting, producing three two-out RBI, and limited opportunities to build separation and break a 29-game losing streak against the Ragin' Cajuns.
Louisiana will look to even the series, and keep its chances of a first-round bye in the SBC Softball Championship tournament alive, when the series resumes on Friday, May 1. Due to forecasted weather, the start time for game two of the series has been moved to 4:00 p.m.
HOW IT HAPPENED
USA opened the scoring in the bottom of the second. After a hit batter and a double put runners in scoring position, Lillie Stagner brought home the game's first run with a groundout.
The Jaguars extended their lead in the third. Presley Lively drew a walk and later scored on a double from Kara Wine. Two batters later, Olivia Branstetter delivered an RBI single to push the advantage to 3-0.
South Alabama added its final run in the fifth inning when Branstetter connected on a solo home run to left-center field.
Louisiana's best scoring opportunity came in the second inning when Cecilia Vasquez doubled to left-center, but the Cajuns were unable to bring her around. Dayzja Williams accounted for the only other hit with an infield single in the third.
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
In the circle, Sage Hoover (10-11) took the loss, allowing three runs on four hits over 2.2 innings. Bethaney Noble provided relief, surrendering one run on four hits across 3.1 innings.
Offensively, Vasquez led Louisiana with a double, while Williams added a single.
Harrison (14-11) struck out nine while crafting the shutout, the first of the Ragin' Cajuns offense in SBC play. Branstetter paced the Jaguars at the plate, going 2-for-3 with a home run and two RBI, while Wine added a double and an RBI in the victory.
