Cajuns tie the game in the fourth but Warhawks push across decisive run in the fifth to take the series
MONROE – The Louisiana Ragin' Cajuns Softball team battled back immediately to draw even in the fourth inning, but ULM used a fifth-inning run to edge Louisiana, 5–4, on Saturday, March 28 in Sun Belt Conference play at the ULM Softball Complex in Monroe, Louisiana.
The win allowed the Warhawks to claim the series victory, following up Friday night's 4-1 decision. The Ragin' Cajuns will look to avoid the sweep on Sunday, March 29 at 12:00 p.m. in the final game of the series in Monroe.
After a quiet first two innings on Saturday, where starting pitchers Skylar Waggoner (ULM) and Bethaney Noble (UL) combined to face only one over the minimum, Louisiana (20-15, 3-5 SBC) struck first in the third inning.
Cecilia Vasquez worked a leadoff walk and Mia Norwood followed by driving a double into the left-center gap, scoring Vasquez for the game's first run. Mia Liscano later added an RBI single that brought Norwood home, giving the Ragin' Cajuns a 2–0 lead.
ULM (21-17, 5-3 SBC) answered in the bottom half of the inning, using a pair of extra-base hits to score four runs and move in front. A two-run double from Meagan Brown tied the game before Morgan Brown followed with another two-run double that gave the Warhawks a 4–2 advantage.
The Ragin' Cajuns responded in the fourth. Madyson Manning reached on a single and later scored during a play at the plate following a walk to Emily Smith, and Vasquez added a squeeze bunt that plated Haley Hart to even the score at 4–4.
ULM reclaimed the lead in the fifth when Olivia Faggard delivered an RBI double to right-center that proved to be the difference.
Norwood, Liscano, Manning, Hart and Kennedy Marceaux each recorded a hit for Louisiana. In the circle, Lexie Delbrey (3-2) took the loss in relief, while Sage Hoover worked 1.1 scoreless innings late to keep Louisiana within striking distance.
ULM reliever Ashanti McDade escaped the fourth inning jam and protected the lead during her 3.2 innings in the circle to secure the win.
Louisiana dropped an SBC series decision on the road for the second time this spring. ULM won a second consecutive league series on its home field, a week removed from winning 2-of-3 vs. South Alabama at the ULM Softball Complex.
The Warhawks claimed their third straight series win over the Ragin' Cajuns dating back to last season's series finale and took an SBC series over Louisiana for the first time.
