Louisiana Polishes Off Southern in Straight Sets

Ragin’ Cajuns keep undefeated home record intact

LAFAYETTE – The Louisiana Ragin' Cajuns Volleyball team scored a kill on nearly half its swings, surging to a .388 hitting percentage, and received contributions from the entire 17-member roster in breezing past Southern in a 3-0 victory (25-10, 25-14, 25-14) on Friday, September 19 in the Ragin' Cajuns Classic at E.K. Long Gym

Louisiana (7-2) landed 41 kills off its 85 swings in landing its second-highest hitting percentage and fifth .300-plus mark of the season.

The Ragin' Cajuns scorched the Jaguars (3-8) for 28 kills on just 55 swings in claiming a commanding 2-0 match lead and needed no more than 30 swings in any set to capture the straight sets sweep.

Highlighting the across-the-board participation was freshmen Rhyan Micciotto with 11 assists and three digs, Brooklyn Vigil with a pair of digs and Emily Williams with a kill and block recording the first stats of their collegiate career. For Miciotto, she made her collegiate debut in her hometown.

The opposite hitter duo of Cailin Demps and Jazmine Gaston continued their precision hitting like clockwork for Louisiana, the tandem combining for 22 kills off a combined 34 swings against only two errors (.588).

Louisiana settled into the lead in Set 1 following back-to-back Marlee Ervin aces for an 8-6 lead. The Ragin' Cajuns then ran away with the frame after five straight kills, two apiece coming from Demps and Lindsey Henry, triggered a 15-1 run that advanced the advantage to 24-9.

UL gradually overtook Southern early in Set 2, running off four straight points to forge ahead 5-3. The offense delivered the knockout punch once again momentarily when Ervin, Gaston, Grace Sweeney and Chelsea Gilmore scored kills in succession to open a 9-4 lead.

The Ragin' Cajuns never trailed in Set 3 and broke away from the only tie, at 6-6, with a quick 7-0 run. A combo block from Sweeney and Gigi Smith cemented separation at 8-6 and the set-changing run was capped off by another combo block from the duo and a Gaston kill.

Southern crawled back with three straight points to trim the UL lead to 13-9, but Smith first and then Demps with back-to-back kills dashed any hopes of the Jaguars getting back into the match.

Louisiana remained undefeated at home on the season moving to 4-0. It was the team's third straight sets sweep victory after claiming none during the 2024 season.

UL collected its 19th straight victory over Southern, a streak that dates back to the 1987 season.

LEADING THE RAGIN' CAJUNS
Demps registered her match-leading 16 kills off 26 swings while hitting .538. She dominated Set 1 with eight kills and needed only seven attempts to record six kills in the match-clincher.

It was the sixth time in nine outings that Demps posted double digits in kills. She notched her second .500-plus hitting effort in a match with double-digit kills and upped her season percentage to .355.

Gaston fired off six kills on eight swings without error, posting a .750 hitting percentage. Sweeney's five kills led a group of eight other Cajuns who recorded at least one kill.

Smith was in on six blocks marking the highest total of her rookie season and the match-leading total.

Libero Kennedy Gustafson rounded up 16 digs to lead all players on both sides. Gustafson collected her seventh double-digit digs performance and upped her season total to 135 digs. Her efforts helped Louisiana enjoy a healthy 39-19 edge in digs and keyed the defensive efforts that held the Jaguars to .023 hitting (20 K, 18 E, 86 TA).

Ryleigh Garis passed out 15 assists, joining Miciotto in double figures.
