Game-winning hit occurred on full count and Louisiana down to its final out
TROY, Ala. – With walk-off heroics from senior third baseman Sam Roe the Louisiana Ragin' Cajuns Softball team claimed a 2-1 win over App State and advanced into the semifinals of the Sun Belt Conference Championship Tournament at the Troy Softball Complex in Troy, Alabama.
Down to final out in the seventh inning and trailing 1-0, Roe (2-for-4, double 2 RBI) took a 3-2 pitch from App State's Sophie Moshos and drove the ball into the right center field gap for a two-run double that kept the Ragin' Cajuns' season alive.
Louisiana (29-24) will now meet either Marshall or Coastal Carolina in the 4:00 p.m. semifinal contest of the SBC Championship Tournament on Friday, May 9 at the Troy Softball Complex.
Roe's hero shot was made possible by clutch two-out hits from Maddie Hayden (3-for-4, run), who first singled, and Dayzja Williams (2-for-4, double, run) who followed with a low-line drive double to left field. That was followed by a walk drawn by Emily Smith to load the bases to bring Roe to the plate.
The Ragin' Cajuns were in need of the two-out rally after the Mountaineers (23-27) snapped a scoreless duel – that had existed for six innings – after Leah Gore led off the top of the seventh with a solo home run.
Mallory Wheeler (7.0 IP, 4 H, 1 R, 0 BB, 6 K), who had held App State to two hits the first six innings, was undeterred by the tiebreaking home run. She rebounded to retire three of the next four batters to hold the Mountaineers to a single run.
It was Hayden singling off of Moshos for the third consecutive plate appearance that stirred up the two-out rally in the bottom of the seventh. Williams doubling and Smith walking set up the reality of the Cajuns breaking through after App State dance around scoring threats in the fifth and sixth inning.
Louisiana picked up its fifth win of the season in come-from-behind fashion that happened in either the seventh inning or later. It also continued the new-found luck in one-run games, the Cajuns now having won five of the last six outings decided by a single run.
Roe increased her season RBI total to 30 and collected her second walk-off hit adding to the two-run home run in the eighth inning of the ULM series opener back on March 21.
Hayden collected multiple hits for the fourth straight game, increasing her season total to 67 and inching her closer to a second consecutive 70-hit season (tallied 71 hits as a junior in 2024). Williams picked up her fifth multiple-hit game in the past three weeks.
Wheeler remained unbeaten in her last seven starts (6-0, 2.22 ERA) and turned in her seventh start of two runs or less allowed dating back to April 8 at Louisiana Tech.
Louisiana has now won its SBC Championship Tournament opener each year since 2010. The Ragin' Cajuns moved to 75-10 all-time in the event are remain alive for a trip to the championship game for the 11th straight appearance.
