Coastal Carolina benefits from one big inning to advance to the championship round
TROY, Ala. – The Louisiana Ragin' Cajuns Softball team fell in the semifinals of the Sun Belt Championship Tournament after a fourth-inning push at the plate carried Coastal Carolina in a 6-1 contest on Friday, May 9 at the Troy Softball Complex in Troy, Alabama.
Sparked by four extra base hits in the top of the fourth the Chanticleers (40-17) put up a five spot that stretched out what was a 1-0 contest entering the inning.
Relief pitcher Sam Ryan (3.1 IP, 3 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 1 K) slowed Coastal down and went on to hold them scoreless the final three innings to give the Ragin' Cajuns (29-25) an opportunity at chipping away at the lead.
CCU starting pitcher Nicolette Picone (7.0 IP, 4 H, 1 R, 2 BB, 4 K) kept her hold on Louisiana, though, yielding only a two-out RBI single to Sam Roe (1-for-3, RBI) in the bottom of the sixth inning.
The loss eliminated the Ragin' Cajuns from the SBC Championship Tournament. The squad finished one game shy of an 11th consecutive trip to the championship game.
Mallory Wheeler (3.1 IP, 6 H, 4 R, 2 BB) continued her late-season rise over the first two innings, facing only two over the minimum. Through the first three innings, a two-out RBI single was the lone blemish against Coastal's offense through 15 batters sent to the plate.
Picone, who retired the first six batters she faced, protected the lead the Chants gained by getting a strikeout swinging with a runner at third to close the bottom half of the third inning.
Coastal's offense sprung to life in the fourth inning as three consecutive hits, starting with a double and a triple, following a sacrifice bunt that moved a runner to third base tacked on three quick runs spreading the margin out to 4-0.
A double play in the bottom of the fourth prevented a response by Louisiana and kept the momentum with Picone and the Chants.
Two innings later Roe continued her two-out work, the RBI single in the bottom of the sixth increasing her RBI total for the tournament to three.
Emily Smith, who again drew walk to set up a run-scoring hit from Roe, picked up a single in the fourth inning to stretch her rookie season-best hitting streak to nine games.
Roe finished tied for the team lead with three hits during the SBC Championship Tournament.
Wheeler put together a solid debut in her first conference tournament. Prior to Coastal's push, the freshman had yielded just two runs over 10-1/3 innings of work in Troy.
