Ragin' Cajuns continue dominance over South Alabama extending win streak to 29 games
LAFAYETTE – Savannah White's attempted sacrifice bunt in the fifth inning led to a pair of runs while Laney Credeur's pinch-hit double capped off a three-run inning as Louisiana earned a 3-0 victory over South Alabama to complete a three-game Sun Belt Conference sweep on Saturday at Lamson Park.
Mallory Wheeler and Tyla Clary combined on a two-hit shutout as Louisiana (23-22, 9-9 SBC) won its fourth straight game and outscored South Alabama (17-27, 6-11 SBC), 13-1, in the series.
The series win for Louisiana – its 15th overall in 18 SBC series matchups overall – extended the Ragin' Cajuns overall win streak over their SBC rival to 29 games dating back to 2016.
Wheeler pitched 4.2 innings in the circle for Louisiana, striking out three and allowing a Sophia Mendoza pinch-hit single in the fifth. The freshman was relieved by Clary after the Jaguars loaded the bases with a pair of walks (one intentional). Clary then got Olivia Branstetter to ground into a fielder's choice at second as Gabbie Stutes' diving stop kept the game scoreless.
Louisiana would answer in their half of the frame as Kayla Falterman led off the inning with a single up the middle before Erin Ardoin reached on a bunt single. Stutes then advanced the runners with a sacrifice bunt and White would drive in Falterman as Branstetter's throw to the plate glanced off the glove of catcher Ansleigh Smith.
Ardoin, who moved to third on the play after the throwing error, would score the second run for the Ragin' Cajuns after Smith attempted to throw out White at second.
Four pitches later, Credeur delivered a pinch-hit double to left, scoring White and giving Louisiana a three-run cushion.
Clary (5-4) pitched the final 2.1 innings and struck out three to earn the win for the Ragin' Cajuns.
Olivia Cato (4-4) took the loss for South Alabama with Smith adding a seventh-inning single.
