Scoreless pitchers’ duel decided in the seventh inning
LAFAYETTE – Mallory Wheeler and the Louisiana Ragin' Cajuns Softball team were the ones handed a hard-luck defeat in a 1-0 pitchers' duel with James Madison on Friday, April 11 in the opening game of Alumni Weekend at Lamson Park.
The visiting Dukes (17-20, 4-9 SBC) were the ones to take advantage of a leadoff walk in the latter stages of the game, spoiling a second consecutive strong start that Wheeler (7.0 IP, 6 H, 1 R, 3 BB, 6 K) turned in.
The top of the seventh began with JMU's Raegan Wall drawing a walk. After stealing second and moving to third on a sacrifice bunt, she was brought home with the game's only run on a one-out single to right field by Lily Romero.
One half inning prior, it was Louisiana (19-21, 5-8 SBC) with the leadoff walk. Pinch runner Dayzja Williams later reached third base, but JMU's Payton List (7.0 IP, 4 H, 0 R, 5 BB, 2 K) induced a pop up for the final out to keep the contest scoreless.
After her team provided her a run, List was able to retire the Ragin' Cajuns in order in the bottom of the seventh to finish off the shutout.
Louisiana was dealt its fifth one-run loss in SBC play – the fourth over the past three weekend series. James Madison picked up its first win over UL as a member of the Sun Belt Conference.
Wheeler picked up where she left off from Tuesday night in Ruston where she limited LA Tech to two runs and struck out seven. She started off with back-to-back innings with two strikeouts recorded, wouldn't allow a leadoff batter to reach base until the fourth inning and no Dukes baserunner would advance past second base until the seventh inning.
Louisiana applied pressure from the start, getting a runner to third base in each of the first four innings.
A caught stealing at home on a double steal attempt in the first inning and a sliding catch on a low line drive to left field in the second inning allowed List to maintain her shutout.
List was tested again in the third and fourth innings with Cajuns runners reaching second and third. She personally ended the rally with a strikeout and by fielding her position, respectively.
Wheeler's efforts increased her strikeouts total for the week to 13. Including Tuesday's start at LA Tech, she's yielded just three runs in 13 innings of work.
Sam Roe's single in the first inning extended her reached base streak to 17 games. The senior third baseman's longest reached base streak as a Ragin' Cajun dates back to SBC Opening Weekend at Marshall.
Mia Norwood delivered a 2-for-3 performance for her second multiple-hit game in the past three outings. She along with Roe extended their current hitting streak to four games.
The Ragin' Cajuns kicked off a six-game homestand that keeps the team at Lamson Park through Easter Weekend. UL also started a stretch where nine of the final 12 SBC games are at home.
