Double play gets Iowa out of trouble and Alabama catches a break in the third inning

TUSCALOOSA, Ala. – The Louisiana Ragin' Cajuns Softball team saw a late-game rally halted against Iowa and one inning be the difference against No. 21 Alabama in a pair of losses on Friday, March 7 in the Spring Break Showdown at Rhoads Stadium in Tuscaloosa, Alabama.

Louisiana had its losing streak extended to five games following the 0-2 start to the weekend tournament at The Rhoads House. The Cajuns have rematches with the Hawkeyes and Crimson Tide on Saturday to conclude the event.

The Ragin' Cajuns (11-9) had the go-ahead run at the plate with one out in the seventh inning before Iowa (14-5) could turn a ground ball double play and hold on a for a 4-2 victory.

Louisiana began to make a push in the late innings, scoring with two outs in the sixth inning off a Sam Roe RBI single and Savannah White hit by pitch with the bases loaded to slice its deficit in half.

The Cajuns defense turned a double play in the bottom of the sixth to keep the momentum on their side heading to the seventh. A one-out single from Kayla Falterman and Vasquez being hit by a pitch brought cleanup hitter Emily Smith to the dish, but the threat was snuffed out as relief pitcher Talia Tretton induced the double play ball.

The Hawkeyes were in control the first five innings behind highly effective pitching from starter Jalen Adams (6.0 IP, 5 H, 2 R, 3 K). She was provided the lead when her offense posted three straight run-scoring innings from the third through fifth – though only one of the runs came via a base hit.

Falterman (2-for-4) extended her reached base streak to 19 games to start the season, Laney Credeur (2-for-3) put the sixth inning rally in motion with her two-out single and Roe (1-for-2, RBI) collected her sixth RBI of the season.

Maddie Hayden earned the 200th base hit of her collegiate career in the third inning, joining older sister Haley Hayden (2014-17) in reaching the 200-hit mark as a Ragin' Cajun.

Sam Ryan (3.0 IP, 6 H, 3 R, 5 BB, 1 K) was charged with the loss, issuing walks in all but one inning in the circle which ultimately led to the Hawkeyes scratching for runs. Tyra Clary (3.0 IP, 3 H, 1 R, 1 BB, 4 K) slowed Iowa down starting by striking out three straight batters with the bases loaded in the fourth inning.

In the nightcap, the Ragin' Cajuns battled 21st-ranked Alabama to a scoreless tie through the first three innings. Bethaney Noble (6.0 IP, 6 H, 3 R) didn't allow a runner in scoring position until a stolen base in the third inning.

Though Alabama ultimately got the first break, it was Louisiana with the first scoring threat after the game's first at bat. Maddie Hayden led off with a double down the left field line in the first inning and was bunted over to third base, but back-to-back strikeouts helped the Tide escape the threat.

Afterwards, Alabama starting pitcher Jocelyn Briski wouldn't allow a Cajuns base runner to reach second base until a double by Smith in the sixth inning.

The Crimson Tide (17-6) picked up all the runs needed in the fourth inning, starting with an RBI triple from Brooke Ellestad and capped off by a two-run home run from Marlie Giles.

Smith (2-for-3, double) posted her fourth multiple-hit game of her rookie season while Hayden (1-for-2, double) extended her current hitting streak to four games.
