Multiple-run innings lead No. 4 LSU past Louisiana
BATON ROUGE – The Louisiana Ragin' Cajuns Softball team yielded a pair of six-run innings to LSU in a midweek matchup on Tuesday, March 11 at Tiger Park in Baton Rouge, falling 14-0 (5 inn.) in the first matchup of the season between the two teams.
Louisiana (13-10), coming off a sweep of Iowa and then-No. 21 Alabama to end the Spring Break Showdown in Tuscaloosa last weekend, had its two-game win streak snapped.
The Ragin' Cajuns had the first scoring opportunity, Maddie Hayden reaching on an error and advancing to third base in the first inning. A strikeout got the Tigers (24-1) out of the inning unscathed.
After keeping UL off the board in the top of the first, LSU immediately capitalized on seizing the momentum by tallying six runs in its first at bat. The early push started with a two-run single from Taylor Edwards and was capped off by a two-run double from Danieca Coffey.
Pitcher Jayden Heavener protected the Tigers lead as she held Louisiana hitless until the fifth inning.
LSU secured the run rule margin in the fourth inning as the first eight batters reached base before the Cajuns could record an out. Beginning with a two-run home run from Edwards two batters into the frame, the Tigers would push across six more runs increasing the advantage to 14-0.
Mia Liscano recorded UL's lone base hit when her leadoff single in the fifth ended Heavener's no-hit bid.
Kayla Falterman continued to reach base drawing two walks which increased her team season-leading total to 14. Falterman upped her on base percentage to .535.
Louisiana's defense posted two inning-ending double plays, advancing the squad's nation-leading total of double plays turned to 22.
LSU's quick start ended Bethaney Noble's start, the righty notching one out and being charged with four runs. Mallory Wheeler (1.2 IP, 4 H, 4 R, 2 ER) and Sam Ryan (4 H, 6 R, 4 ER) combined to slow the Tigers down until the fourth inning splurge.
The Cajuns and Tigers began Year No. 6 of regular season matchups since the all-time series was resumed in 2020. LSU won the regular season game at Tiger Park for the fifth time in the six-year stretch.
