Amijah Price and Mikaylah Manley combine for 47 points to lead the way
LAFAYETTE – The Louisiana Ragin' Cajuns Women's Basketball team followed the lead of Mikaylah Manley and Amijah Price to record a 97-56 victory over Dillard on Monday, December 29 at the Cajundome, notching the team's first victory of the season.
Manley and Price took turns delivering a double-figure scoring quarter in the first half as Louisiana (1-11) built a 56-22 halftime edge all but ensuring a victory to kick off a five-game homestand.
Price wound up with her season-high total of 30 points which marked the first time a Ragin' Cajun reached the mark since February 2021 (Brandi Williams, 32 points at ULM).
After the opening tip, Manley scored the Cajuns' first six points of the game and finished with 13 points in the first quarter. She scored seven of the team's final 10 points in the stanza – expanding a 15-8 advantage – capped off by back-to-back buckets following Dillard turnovers in the final 34 seconds that stretched the lead to 25-10.
Price, who provided an immediate spark as soon as she entered the game following the first quarter media timeout by scoring two layups in less than 35 seconds as UL broke free from a 6-all tie, recorded 17 points in the second quarter as she alone outscored the Bleu Devils in the period.
A three-pointer and layup delivered by Price in the opening minute of the second quarter quickly grew the UL lead to 30-10. Price's next flurry returned the margin to 20-plus for good, starting with a triple at 6:58 making it 37-15 and her personal eight-point spurt completed at 3:15 with another triple that made it 44-17.
Louisiana recorded 21 made field goals in the first half, with seven makes from three-point land, to build the commanding halftime lead. The defense forced 18 turnovers from the Bleu Devils which led to 33 of the 56 points produced.
Imani Daniel scored 10 of the Ragin' Cajuns first 14 points in the third quarter capped off by two free throws at the 2:40 mark of the third quarter, the production helping to extend the lead to 70-31. Moments later it was a layup from Price at the 2:14 mark which provided the first 40-point edge of the contest at 72-31.
Dillard used a 13-2 run midway through the fourth quarter finished by a Davielis Berroa layup at 3:55 making it 84-52 in an attempt to lower the deficit below 30 points for the first time since the second quarter.
Paced by a combined nine points from Stephanie Mosley and New Iberia native Zoriahn Davis, UL countered with a 15-2 game-ending scoring spree. The margin returned to 40-plus after Davis' triple at 1:03 and Mosley's layup with 31 seconds remaining that capped off the scoring in the contest.
Monday's contest ended an eight-day layoff of Louisiana which returns to SBC play on Thursday, January 1 vs. Troy at the Cajundome.
