Green Wave use 12-0 to erase six-point deficit to edge Cajuns in in-state battle
LAFAYETTE – The Tulane Green Wave used a 12-0 second-half scoring run to turn a six-point deficit into a six-point lead, and the Greenies held on for a 66-62 win over the Louisiana Ragin' Cajuns before an announced crowd of 3,047 Tuesday night at the Cajundome.
Â
Rowan Brumbaugh led four players in double figures for Tulane (3-0) with 19 points. Tyler Ringgold added 17, while KJ Greene and Curtis Williams Jr., came off the bench to add 14 and 10 points respectively.
Â
Louisiana (1-2), playing without point guard and leading scorer Jamryon Keller was led by Jaxon Olvera with 19 points. De'Vion Lavergne added 11 points and Milan Mejia chipped in 10.
Â
"Jamyron was hurt in practice yesterday," Louisiana head coach Quannas White said after the game. "He tried to go at shootaround today, but wasn't able to. I was really proud of the way Milan came off the bench and played for us tonight. He really gave us a spark that we needed."
Â
The Ragin' Cajuns used a six-point spurt in the final 1:02 to turn a five-point deficit into a 30-29 lead at the break as freshman Michael Collins hit a 3-pointer and Mejia got a steal and reverse layup to send the Cajuns into the locker room with their first lead since the 16:24 mark.
Â
Olvera's shot in the paint and a 3-pointer from the right corner by Dariyus Woodson gave Louisiana a 41-35 lead with 14:48 remaining, but Ringgold scored six of the Wave's next 12 points to give Tulane the lead for good.Â
Â
The Cajuns missed their next seven shots after Woodson's 3-pointer and didn't score again until Lavergne's two free throws with 9:06 remaining.
Â
Louisiana went over seven minutes without a field goal until Mejia's 3-pointer at the 7:25 mark made it 49-46. Olvera added a 3-pointer with 5:53 left to get Louisiana to within 53-51, but the Cajuns could get no closer as Williams converted on back-to-back layups to push Tulane's lead to 57-51.
Â
Free-throw shooting hurt the Cajuns, as Louisiana finished 11-for-21 from the charity stripe, while Tulane, which made 47 of 48 attempts in its first two wins, finished 21-for-27.Â
Â
Louisiana finished 9-for-30 from behind the 3-point line while holding the Green Wave to 3-for-14 aim from long range. The Ragin' Cajuns won the rebounding battle with a 33-32 advantage that included 12 offensive boards.
Â
Lavergne led the Cajuns with seven rebounds, while Scotty Middleton paced Tulane with nine.
Â
Louisiana will play its next four games on the road beginning on Friday when it travels west along I-10 to face McNeese at Townsley Law Arena. Tipoff is set for 6 p.m., with the game available on ESPN+.
