LAFAYETTE – Harley Krause recorded all six of her kills in a decisive fourth set while Marlee Ervin, Cailin Demps and Lindsey Henry all recorded double-digit kills as Louisiana used a balanced attack and opened its Sun Belt Conference home schedule with a four-set (25-23, 25-17, 21-25, 25-22) win over App State on Friday at Earl K. Long Gym.
Louisiana (10-3, 2-1 SBC) ran its record to 6-0 at home this season and used an 11-4 run down the stretch to avert a fifth set against App State (10-4, 1-2 SBC) and surpass last season's win total.
Krause hit .545 in the fourth set on 11 attempts as Louisiana trailed 18-14 in the fourth before mounting a comeback. The sophomore entered the match after App State took an 11-8 lead.
Her fourth kill of the set knotted the final set at 19-all, and after an App State timeout, added a go-ahead kill for a 20-19 lead.
Both team traded points with App State forcing a 22-22 tie – the 10th of the set – before a kill by Henry gave Louisiana the lead for good at 23-22.
Grace Sweeney's second ace of the match gave Louisiana a 24-22 lead, and after App State's final timeout of the set, Ervin finished off the match with her career-high tying 14th kill.
Both teams came out swinging in the first set with Louisiana hitting .405 and claiming the opening set for the 11th time in 13 matches. App State hit .367 in the opening stanza with Lou Johnson leading the way with five kills in seven attempts.
The Ragin' Cajuns kept up their offensive prowess in the second set, outhitting the Mountaineers, .370-.121, to take a commanding two-set lead with Henry and Demps combining for nine of Louisiana's 14 kills.
App State would avoid the sweep, claiming the third set as Keionna Mackey produced five of her team-high 12 kills with Bella Hutchins converting on three kills in four swings.
