Louisiana uses dominant defense effort to even series with Troy and capture tiebreaker

LAFAYETTE – The Louisiana Ragin' Cajuns Volleyball team gained a measure of revenge and earned the season tiebreaker over Troy with a 3-0 win (25-20, 25-20, 25-21) on Friday, October 17 at E.K. Long Gym.

The defense stole the show for the Ragin' Cajuns (11-7, 3-5 SBC) as a Sun Belt-play high 12 blocks played a key role in bottling up Troy's Amiah Butler one night after she scored 29 kills on .434 hitting in a four-set win for the Trojans (4-12, 2-6 SBC).

Louisiana's defense pressured Butler into 10 attack errors and a .000 hitting percentage for the contest (10 K, 10 E, 38 TA). The blocks accounted for over half of the 20 attack errors committed by Troy, the visitors held to a paltry .120 hitting percentage.

While the defense – and the team's tough service – disrupted the Trojans' rhythm, the Ragin' Cajuns' offense came out swinging beginning with 14 kills on .462 hitting in Set 1 and proved unstoppable the entire night.

Louisiana saw five players score at least five kills in totaling 42 kills off just 88 swings. The middle kill was a constant source of offense charged by middle blockers Chelsea Gilmore and Lindsey Henry who combined for 11 kills off only 20 swings.

It was a successful challenge very early in Set 1 that set the tone for the contest, UL getting the reversal to avoid a 5-1 deficit. What followed was a Gilmore kill, Kennedy Gustafson ace and Cailin Demps kill then a Butler error, and it was quickly 6-4 in the Cajuns' favor.

Louisiana never trailed on the way to the match lead, breaking free from an 8-all tie with kills from Gilmore, Jazmine Gaston and Grace Sweeney in succession to forge ahead 11-8.

Strong finishes to Sets 2 and 3 completed the straight sets sweep that halted the Cajuns' four-match losing streak and a five-match skid against Troy in E.K. Long Gym.

A Sweeney kill and Gilmore service ace capped off a set-ending 5-1 run that closed out Set 2 after the Trojans cut the lead to 20-19. Then after fighting through 12 ties and nine lead changes in Set 3, it was a set-ending 7-1 run, featuring two kills and two blocks from Lindsey Henry, that erased a 20-18 deficit.

LEADING THE RAGIN' CAJUNS
From the outside hitters' slot, Sweeney and Marlee Ervin each scored 10 kills. Demps was highly efficient in her 13 swings with eight finding the floor for a kill.

From the middle, Gilmore generated six kills and Henry scored five kills while posting a season-high tying nine blocks. Henry increased her team-leading season blocks total to 60 and matched her season-high nine posted back on September 6 vs. Abilene Christian.

Demps joined Henry in the block party, her seven blocks representing a career-high total and increasing her series total to 12 blocks.

Strong back row play was sparked by 12 digs from Gustafson and an additional nine from Sophia Armstrong. Freshman setter and Lafayette native Rhyan Miciotto added six digs.

Gustafson served up three of Louisiana's six aces. Setter Ryleigh Garis handed out 21 of the team's 39 assisted kills.
