Louisiana and Texas State to Meet in Sun Belt Championship Game

5/10/2024 10:41:00 PM | Softball

Two teams to battle for tournament trophy in 1 p.m. contest Saturday in San Marcos

SAN MARCOS, Texas – 18th-ranked Louisiana Ragin' Cajuns Softball is set to meet Texas State at 1 p.m. on Saturday, May 11 in the championship game of the Sun Belt Conference Championship tournament at Bobcat Softball Stadium in San Marcos, Texas.

The winner of the Ragin' Cajuns-Bobcats contest will receive the Sun Belt Conference's automatic bid into the NCAA Tournament which begins with the regional round May 17-19.

Louisiana (42-16) advanced to Saturday's championship game with a come-from-behind 4-2 win over Troy in Friday's semifinal game, the winning runs provided by Victoria Valdez's three-run home in the sixth inning.

The Bobcats (44-13) earned their spot in the contest with a rally of their own in the semifinals, erasing a 3-0 deficit on South Alabama to force extra innings where Kat Zarate hit a walk-off homer in the eighth.

The matchup will air on The Goat 103.3 FM and 1420 AM in the Acadiana region and The Varsity Network worldwide with Cody Junot and Bobby Neveaux calling the action. Live video will be provided by an ESPN+ broadcast that features play-by-play from Noah Frary and analysis from Dorian Craft.

It's the 10th consecutive appearance in the SBC Championship tournament title game for Louisiana and 22nd overall in the 24-year history of the event.

The Ragin' Cajuns are seeking a fifth consecutive SBC Championship tournament title – at the site where the streak began back in 2019 – and the 19th overall in the 24-year history of the event.

Louisiana and Texas State meet in the SBC championship game for the fifth time in the past eight editions of the league's postseason tournament. The Cajuns and Bobcats met for the title from 2016-18 and then again in 2022. It's the first time meeting in the finals in San Marcos.

Saturday's contest marks the final one before the NCAA postseason begins. The NCAA Tournament Selection Show is scheduled for 6:00 p.m. (CDT) on Sunday, May 12 live on ESPN2 with the Ragin' Cajuns hosting a watch party at Adopted Dog Brewing (329 Dulles Dr.) beginning at 5:00 p.m.

Louisiana carries a 16-game win streak in the SBC Championship tournament, which began during the 2019 event in San Marcos, into Saturday's championship contest with Texas State.

Louisiana is seeking to defend its most recent titles claimed in San Marcos (Texas) in 2019, Troy (Alabama) in 2021, Mobile (Alabama) in 2022 and at Lamson Park in 2023.
