SB Maddie Hayden Legs Out Double vs. Liberty 03.02.24

Landry Guides, Offense Provides Late-Heroics as Cajuns Best Liberty

Louisiana wins survival of the fittest in pitcher’s duel at OU Tournament

NORMAN, Okla. – A Maddie Hayden double and a wild pitch in the sixth inning set up the winning tally as the Louisiana Ragin' Cajuns Softball team captured a 1-0 win over Liberty on Saturday, March 2 in the OU Tournament at Love's Field in Norman, Oklahoma.

With Hayden on third base after the double and wild pitch sequence, Sam Roe lifted a sacrifice fly into right field that broke a scoreless stalemate between the Cajuns (9-11) and Flames (8-10).

Sam Landry, who pitched seven innings of two-hit shutout softball, finished off her masterpiece by retiring Liberty in order in the seventh. Landry struck out five and kept the Flames from advancing a runner past second base the entire contest.

The pitching of Landry and Liberty's Kaylan Yoder stole the show as Saturday's action in the OU Tournament wrapped up. Neither hurler allowed a hit through the first three innings, with Landry facing the minimum.

Both teams collected their first hit and threat in the fourth inning. A one-out walk and single gave the Flames a pair of baserunners before Landry got a strikeout swinging and fly out. In the bottom half, Sophie Piskos singled with two outs and reached third after Victoria Valdez's infield pop fly was misplayed, but Yoder got Alexa Langliers to fly out to center field.

The Cajuns defense came up with its biggest play in the fifth inning after Liberty had a runner in scoring position with one out. Mihyia Davis snagged a sinking fly ball to center field and doubled off the runner to end the frame.

The Flames never rediscovered momentum – the last six batters were retired – and Hayden delivered the one key kit Louisiana had been looking for.

Landry pitched the Cajuns second complete game shutout of the season – the first since her no-hitter in the 8-0 (6 inn.) win over California on Opening Weekend.

Saturday's matchup marked the first-ever meeting between Louisiana and Liberty on the softball diamond. The two teams have a quick rematch, meeting again on Sunday, March 3 at 10:00 a.m. at Love's Field.
