Walks provide the lead while pitching and defense hold Cowgirls in check
LAFAYETTE – A pair of bases loaded walks carried the Louisiana Ragin' Cajuns Softball team to a 2-1 win over McNeese on Wednesday, March 13 at Yvette Girouard Field at Lamson Park.
Sam Roe and Sophie Piskos drew the free passes that forced in the runs that snapped a scoreless tie in the third inning – proving to be the difference-making tallies for Louisiana (15-12) which collected its sixth straight victory.
Sam Landry (6.1 IP, 1 H 1 R, 5 K) took a one-hit shutout into the seventh inning, but the Cowgirls used three free passes and a misplay to scratch their lone run.
Chloe Riassetto induced three ground balls after relieving Landry with the bases loaded in preventing McNeese (14-12) from gaining anything more than the run off of the misplay. She collected her first save of the season.
The third inning production for UL was set up by a leadoff single from Victoria Valdez followed by a walk from Cecilia Vasquez. Brooke Ellestad's sacrifice bunt moved them up one base and Maddie Hayden was hit by a pitch loading the bases.
Cowgirls pitcher Shaelyn Sanders nearly escaped the jam as Mihyia Davis grounded to third leading to a force out at home. After a first-pitch strike to Roe, Sanders lost her command and threw eight consecutive pitches out of the zone for the walks to Roe and Piskos that gave the Cajuns a 2-0 lead.
Landry and the UL defense had the Cowgirls at a standstill throughout the night with a runner not advancing past second base until the seventh inning, set up by a walk and hit by pitch that was followed by a sacrifice bunt.
Davis led the Cajuns with a 2-for-3 performance at the plate. Roe and Piskos had the lone RBI in a contest where all three runs crossed the plate without the benefit of a base hit.
Landry, who pitched a one-hitter for the second time in her past three starts, increased her personal win streak to six games and improved to 7-5 on the season.
Wednesday's game marked the first of two in the Cajuns-Cowgirls midweek home-and-home series this spring. Louisiana returns the visit traveling to Lake Charles on April 24.
UP NEXT FOR LOUISIANA
The Ragin' Cajuns start conference play on the road in Mobile, Alabama visiting South Alabama for the Sun Belt Conference Opening Weekend series at Jaguar Field from Friday-Sunday, March 15-17.
Louisiana and South Alabama are scheduled to begin the series at 6:00 p.m. on Friday.
All three games between the Cajuns and Jaguars will be televised live on ESPN+ while radio coverage is available on The Goat 103.3 FM and 1420 AM in the Acadiana region and worldwide via The Varsity Network.
