No. 2 Texas holds Louisiana in top first, then takes lead in bottom half
AUSTIN, Texas – No. 2 Texas took advantage of its opportunities and scored a 5-0 win over the Louisiana Ragin' Cajuns Softball team on Friday; February 23 in the Lone Star State Invitational at Red & Charline McCombs Field in Austin, Texas.
The homestanding Longhorns (9-0) loaded the bases in the first inning and pushed across an early run that stood up behind the pitching of Teagan Kavan (7.0 IP, 2 H, 0 R, 6 K).
Texas got a two-run single from Katie Stewart in the third inning and a misplay gave an additional base that led to a sacrifice fly increasing the Horns' lead to 4-0.
Then in the sixth inning it was back-to-back two-out singles leading to runners on the corners that was followed by a rundown resulting in the final tally of the game.
Conversely, Louisiana (6-7) missed on its first opportunity in the game's first at bat. Mihyia Davis doubled with one out, but Kavan posted a strikeout and induced a fly out.
After the Longhorns escaped in the top of the first, the Ragin' Cajuns were unable to have a runner reach base the final six innings.
The first four runs Texas scored were charged to Chloe Riassetto (2.2 IP, 6 H, 4 R) who was dealt her first loss of the season in four decisions. Lexie Delbrey (3.1 IP, 4 H, 1 R) kept the Longhorns in check during her relief effort, holding them scoreless for three full innings before the two-out tally off of the rundown in the sixth.
The Cajuns finished 0-2 on the opening day of the Lone Star State Invitational. Earlier in the day No. 12 Stanford followed the lead of ace pitcher NiJaree Canady, who struck out 10 batters, to a 4-1 win over Louisiana.
Louisiana and Texas met at McCombs Field for the fifth straight season. The Longhorns, who swept a pair of games in a tournament at the facility last March, extended their series win streak over the Cajuns to three games.
UL and Texas are set for a rematch in the Lone Star State Invitational on Sunday, February 25 at 12:30 p.m.
