Louisiana Splits Two on Saturday at Lone Star State Invitational

Cajuns knock off Colorado State, bested by No 12 Stanford in rematch

AUSTIN, Texas – The Louisiana Ragin' Cajuns Softball team split a pair of games on Day 2 of the Lone Star State Invitational, opening with a 4-2 win over Colorado State then falling 8-0 (6 inn.) to No. 12 Stanford on Saturday, February 24 at Red & Charline McCombs Field in Austin, Texas.

Louisiana (7-8) received early offense against CSU (7-6), getting a first inning RBI single from Sam Roe and second inning leadoff home run from Laney Credeur for a quick 2-0 lead. The Cajuns stayed ahead behind the pitching of Sam Landry who carried a shutout into the seventh inning.

Insurance runs came in the seventh after Cecilia Vasquez's bunt to lead off resulted in a double. Maddie Hayden singled Vasquez home and later scored herself after Roe's second hit of the day led to her moving to third base.

The extra runs were handy as the Rams spoiled Landry's shutout bid with a two-out home run in the bottom of the seventh.

UL piled up 12 base hits off of CSU pitching, led by multiple-hit games from Hayden (2-for-4, RBI), Roe (2-for-4, RBI), Sophie Piskos (2-for-3) and Vasquez (2-for-3, double).

Landry (7.0 IP, 4 H, 2 R, 5 K) notched her second complete game victory of the season and first since the no-hitter vs. California on Opening Weekend (Feb. 9). She snapped a string of five straight decisions with a loss.

Louisiana and Colorado State met on the softball diamond for the first time since the 1994 season. The Cajuns improved to 3-0 all-time vs. the Rams.

In the rematch with Stanford, the Cardinal escaped a bases-loaded jam in the top of the first before laying claim to the lead after a fielding error in the second inning led to a sacrifice fly.

Chloe Riassetto (4.1 IP, 4 H, 4 R, 4 K) held Stanford hitless over the first 3-2/3 innings. After the Cardinal broke up the no-hitter with Ava Gall's two-out single in the fourth, a double from Emily Jones followed making it 2-0 and beginning the separation.

A two-run double in the fifth inning and a four-spot in the sixth inning allowed Stanford (8-4) to end the game early.

Hayden finished 2-for-3 to collect her second multiple-hit game of the day. She finished Saturday as UL's leading hitter with a 4-for-7 showing and upped her season total of multiple-hit games to team-best six.

The Cardinal picked up a two-game sweep of the Cajuns in the Lone Star State Invitational and remained unbeaten (3-0) all-time in regular season matchups with Louisiana.

The Ragin' Cajuns remained winless (0-8) when scoring less than three runs and fell to 2-8 in early season matchups with Power 5 foes.
