Louisiana makes all the right moves in taking early lead in Top 25 series
LAFAYETTE – The 23rd-ranked Louisiana Ragin' Cajuns Softball received a stellar pitching performance from Chloe Riassetto and broke free in the fifth inning for a 4-1 win over No. 22 Baylor on Friday, February 16 in the opening game of a three-game series at Yvette Girouard Field at Lamson Park.
Riassetto (7.0 IP, 5 H, 1 R) retired the first 12 batters she faced and took a shutout into the seventh inning. It was the first complete game of the sophomore's collegiate career and her longest outing in the circle.
Louisiana (5-3) got the critical play at the critical time in the fifth inning – a caught stealing of a Bears baserunner at third just before a double – to spark a momentum change in what had been a scoreless stalemate.
A one-out single from Victoria Valdez in the bottom half of the fifth set the Cajuns' game-winning sequence in motion. It assured UL of a baserunner even though Baylor starting pitcher Aliyah Binford induced a fielder's choice grounder.
Maddie Hayden then delivered a sinking line drive single into left field that was misplayed allowing Kayla Falterman to score from first base for the game's first run. Mihyia Davis followed with a perfectly placed drag bunt and beat the throw to avoid the third out, all while Hayden rounded third to score making it 2-0.
The next at bat, Alexa Langeliers sealed the victory with her two-run home run to left center field that increased the advantage to 4-0.
The Bears (1-3) spoiled Riassetto's bid at a complete game shutout when pinch hitter Shannon Vivoda delivered a two-out RBI single in the top of the seventh.
Louisiana snapped a three-game losing skid and came away victorious in its first matchup with a Top 25 team this season.
Friday's game marked the start of the first traditional weekend series in the Cajuns-Bears series – the programs had met 30 times previously in a variety of settings. UL upped its all-time series lead to 18-13 and broke a two-game losing streak to BU.
