Louisiana outperforms Georgia Southern in 2024 season finale
LAFAYETTE – The Louisiana Ragin' Cajuns Volleyball team delivered a spirited effort filled with storylines and completed with a storybook finish in its 3-1 (25-20, 25-23, 19-25, 25-16) win over Georgia Southern on Senior Day at E.K. Long Gym.
The victory was sealed with a walk-off ace served up by senior Siena DeCambra who was appearing on the court for the first time this season. DeCambra, injured in the preseason which kept the all-conference setter out of action, recorded match point on the final play of her collegiate career.
Fellow senior Cami Hicks broke another record on her final night at E.K. Long. Her nine blocks pushed her season total to 135, eclipsing the previous rally scoring era single-season blocks record of 129 set by Clarice Laires in 2001.
Libero Mio Yamamoto reached exactly 20 digs on her final night in a Cajuns uniform. It marked the 13th time this season she reached 20 digs and the 23rd time overall in her two-year stay in Louisiana.
The senior spotlight also shone on setter Danielle Taix who was three assists and two digs shy of a 20-20 double-double.
Louisiana (9-16, 5-9 SBC) brought a palpable energy on defense the whole night that disrupted most of what Georgia Southern (20-5, 10-4 SBC) attempted to do. The Cajuns out-blocked the Eagles 14.0-9.0, out-dug them 85-79 and forced the visitors into a season-high in attack errors (29) and lowest hitting percentage (.128).
The Cajuns intense pressure applied on defense forced the Eagles into at least seven attack errors in each of the three sets won. Georgia Southern, which hit above .250 each set on Thursday, wouldn't come remotely close to the mark in any of those frames and hit below .100 in Sets 2 and 4.
Hicks set the tone with the block in the opening set, getting a hand in on five including back-to-back midway through as the Cajuns increased the lead to 15-10. UL had nine blocks over the first two sets with the last one being a combo stuff from Chelsea Gilmore and Cailin Demps that preserved the Set 2 lead at 21-19.
The Eagles used their match-high 16 kills and .234 hitting percentage in Set 3 to extend the match. Louisiana responded with 12 kills and its match-best .320 hitting percentage to stay ahead in Set 4, taking control after back-to-back Georgia Southern miscues were followed by a Lauryn Hill kill and Yamamoto ace completing a 4-0 run that opened an 18-11 advantage.
The win allowed Louisiana to even the all-time series with Georgia Southern at 5-apiece. The contest marked the final home outing of the fall for Louisiana and concluded the 2024 season.
