Wyoming Extends Play, Slips by Louisiana in Match Tiebreaker

Cajuns complete play in the Red Raider Classic Saturday evening meeting Texas Tech at 7:00 p.m.

LUBBOCK, Texas – The Louisiana Ragin' Cajuns Volleyball team fell short in extra points of a five-set match with Wyoming on Saturday, September 2 in the Red Raider Classic, as the Cowgirls collected a 3-2 (16-25, 25-23, 22-25, 25-17, 17-15) win at the United Supermarkets Arena.

The extra points finish was indicative of an evenly contested match: Wyoming held a slim edge in kills (62-61) and blocks (9-8), aces were even (7-all) and both teams scooped 80-plus digs with Louisiana holding the close advantage (87-83).

The Cajuns appeared to be on the way to victory after a pair of combo blocks from Cami Hicks and Mya Wilson factored into a 12-9 lead in the winner-take-all stanza. The Cowgirls, though, rallied and twice forged a tie with kills from Tierney Barlow, the latter evening the score at 14-all.

Wyoming was the first to score in extra points, but UL sided out with a powerful kill from Kara Barnes out of a timeout to forge a 15-all tie and continue extra points.

However, a near-miss on a slide play attempt by Barnes allowed the Cowgirls to side out and on the next rally Celeste Darling's attack attempt went long and Wyoming was awarded match point.

Shyia Richardson paced Louisiana with 20 kills, her second 20-kill effort of the season, and served up four aces. Darling generated 13 kills while Wilson scored 10 kills and posted a match-high seven blocks.

UL's 80-plus digs effort was led by Mio Yamamoto's match-and season-high 22 digs and double-digit efforts from Kennedy Gustafson (18) and Siena DeCambra (16) who also delivered 51 assists.

Louisiana scored the first three points of the match, got timely scores to stay ahead including Wilson tooling the block for a 17-13 edge, then a 5-1 run followed to give the Cajuns firm control. Wyoming bounced back from a 4-0 deficit in Set 2 to make it a nip-and-tuck affair before a call was upheld at 24-23 allowing the Cowgirls to escape extra points.

The teams split the next two frames by each building big leads. The Cajuns were doubling up the Cowgirls in Set 3, at 10-5, after a Barnes middle kill and later rolled out to a 20-9 lead. Wyoming countered with a 9-0 run early in Set 4 that built a 12-2 advantage, then held off a 6-2 Cajuns run that sliced the lead to 20-14.

Saturday's matchup marked the first-ever meeting between the two programs.
