Strong Finish For Potgieter Leads Louisiana at NCAA Norman Regional

NORMAN, Okla. – Malan Potgieter recorded three consecutive birdies on the second nine to finish at 1-under-71 overall and lead the Louisiana Ragin' Cajuns during the opening day of the 2023 NCAA Norman Men's Golf Regional on Monday at Jimmie Austin OU Golf Club.

Louisiana, the No. 12 seed in the field, recorded a team score of 9-over-297 to sit in 13th place after the opening round of the 54-hole event. Texas Tech (278), host Oklahoma (279), Alabama (281), Duke (283) and Colorado (284) finished in the top five after the first 18 holes.

Potgieter posted a 2-over-38 on the back nine with his only blemish coming at No. 17 where he recorded a double bogey.

The freshman would record his first birdie of the round at No. 3 before moving to 2-over after a bogey on the following hole. Potgieter would then birdie No. 6, 7 and 8 to move to 1-under before finishing his round with a par on the par-4, No. 9.

Potgieter finished the first day in a tie for 15th place, five strokes behind Nick Dunlap of Alabama and Oklahoma's Drew Goodman.

Eli Ortego recorded an even-par 72 for Louisiana in the opening round to finish tied for 25th. The Lafayette native opened with a par of birdies through his first five holes and made the turn at 2-under-36 after a birdie on the par-5, No. 18.

Charlie Flynn and Matt Weber each posted a 5-over-77 in the opening round for the Ragin' Cajuns with Jake Marler shooting an 87. Flynn was 5-over at the turn and recorded an eagle – one of six recorded overall in the opening round – at the par-4, No. 3.
