LEADING OFF
>> The No. 20-ranked Louisiana Ragin' Cajuns Softball team, the three-time defending Sun Belt Conference regular season and tournament champions, officially makes its 2023 season debut from Friday-Sunday, Feb. 10-12 at Yvette Girouard Field at Lamson Park, hosting the 37th Annual Louisiana Classics tournament.
>> Joining the Ragin' Cajuns for the round robin-formatted event is Lafayette College and SFA.
>> Louisiana enters the sixth (6th) season of the Gerry Glasco era.
>> As he heads into Year No. 6 guiding the Ragin' Cajuns, Gerry Glasco aims to continue molding his influx of young talent - the bulk from the No. 1 recruiting class that debuted in Spring 2022 - into a strong and durable national postseason contender.
>> The three key pieces to last season's pitching success remain intact (Meghan Schorman, Kandra Lamb and Sam Landry) and all but two starters in the lineup return headlined by leading home run hitters Alexa Langeliers and Karly Heath (13 each), leading run-producer Stormy Kotzelnick (51 RBI), top hitter for average Jourdyn Campbell (.392) and stolen-bases leader Maddie Hayden (28-of-34).
>> The Louisiana Classics precedes a rigorous stretch of competition that awaits the Ragin' Cajuns beginning next week at the TaxAct Clearwater Invitational (Feb. 16-19), followed by matchups with LSU, Texas and Florida in succession the following three weekends.
>> Friday's season-opening contest vs. Lafayette College marks the 1,000th game for Louisiana at Yvette Girouard Field at Lamson Park since games were first played on the site of the facility back in February 1985.
>> The Ragin' Cajuns welcome Lafayette College to Lamson Park for the first time, as well as match up with the Leopards for the first time in program history. SFA returns to Lamson Park for the first time since the 2019 season when the LadyJacks took part in the 33rd Annual Louisiana Classics.

DIAMOND NOTES
- Louisiana was preseason ranked in three major national polls: No. 20 in D1Softball, No. 22 in Softball America and No. 24 in the ESPN/USA Softball poll. The Ragin' Cajuns were receiving votes in the USA Today/NFCA poll, third in line from No. 25.
- Louisiana was the unanimous selection as the favorite to win the 2023 Sun Belt Conference softball title in a vote of the league's 12 head coaches. The Ragin' Cajuns were selected as the conference's preseason favorite for the fifth (5th) consecutive year.Â
- Sophie Piskos (C), Stormy Kotzelnick (1B), Alexa Langeliers (SS), Jourdyn Campbell (3B), Maddie Hayden (OF) and Karly Heath (DP) were the six Ragin' Cajuns voted onto the Preseason All-Sun Belt Team.
- Alexa Langeliers represented Louisiana on D1Softball's Top 100 Players List. She was joined by Meghan Schorman on Extra Inning Softball's Elite 100 College Player Rankings.
- Louisiana (47-13, 23-4 Sun Belt in 2022) is coming off the program's 23rd consecutive 40-win season and NCAA Tournament appearance. In the 2022 season, the Ragin' Cajuns placed a conference-high nine players on the All-Sun Belt team, produced five NFCA All-Central Region performers, recorded a program-record .351 season batting average and generated the most home runs in Glasco's tenure (82).  Â
- In the pitcher's circle, the Ragin' Cajuns return all 47 victories posted in the 2022 season headlined by the trio of Sam Landry (20), Meghan Schorman (17) and Kandra Lamb (9) who combined for all but one of the triumphs. A year ago, the staff ranked Top 25 nationally in ERA (2.17), shutouts (16), strikeout-to-walk ratio (3.97) and was one of only three units in Division I Softball to amass 500-plus strikeouts (504).
- Last spring, the Ragin' Cajuns utilized a lineup that featured at most two upperclassmen and as many as five freshmen designed to acclimate the youthful group to the collegiate game. Fast forward to 2023 and Louisiana is expected to have a more experienced group taking the field each time out.
