Potgieter's Top-20 Finish Leads Louisiana at Bayou City Collegiate Classic

HOUSTON – Freshman Malan Potgieter shot a 1-under-par 71 to record his third top-20 finish of the season and Matt Weber equaled his best 54-hole score total as the Louisiana Ragin' Cajuns Golf team wrapped up play on Tuesday at the Bayou City Collegiate Classic at the Westwood Golf Club.
Louisiana posted a team score of 6-over 294 to finish 12th overall in the field at 884. First-day leader Sam Houston claimed the team title at 839 with Houston (848), Lamar (855), Oral Roberts (855) and UT Arlington (858) rounding out the top-five.
Potgieter, who posted a pair of top-10 finishes in the fall, finished at 2-under-214 for the 54-hole event and finished tied for 12th overall in the 92-player field. Starting at the No. 10 hole, Potgieter made the turn at 1-under-35 before posting a birdie at No. 1 and later at No. 6.
Weber recorded his second consecutive 54-hole score of 220 after posting the team's low score in the final round at 2-under-70. The Lafayette native worked around an early bogey with a pair of birdies and made the turn at 1-under. Weber posted a birdie at No. 1, and after recording back-to-back bogeys, would birdie the next two holes at No. 4 and 5 to get back to below par.
Eli Ortego finished tied for 52nd overall after shooting a 4-over 76 to finish at 223 with Charlie Flynn (75-75-77-227) recording a 77 and Hudson Dubinski (79-79-80-238) an 80.
Burke Alford, playing as an individual, recorded a career-low round of 1-under-71 and finished at 226 overall for the event.
Louisiana will wrap up its stretch of three events in as many weeks when it co-hosts the Lake Las Vegas Intercollegiate at the Reflection Bay Golf Club in Henderson, Nevada. The three-day event is scheduled from Feb. 27-March 1 with the Ragin' Cajuns co-hosting with Sun Belt Conference member Arkansas State.
