New York native and dual citizen has shined collegiately and with Canadian National Team program
LAFAYETTE – Louisiana Ragin' Cajuns Softball head coach Gerry Glasco announced on Friday (Jan. 6, 2023) the signing of JUCO All-American and Canadian National Team pitcher Sam Ryan of Monroe, New York to join the program beginning with the 2024 season.
Ryan, who will officially join the Ragin' Cajuns in the Fall 2023 semester, is coming off a heralded two-year run at Chattanooga State Community College and was part of a medal-winning experience with the 2019 Canadian Junior National Team.
Ryan crafted 40 wins, piled up over 300 strikeouts, led Chattanooga State to a pair of national tournament appearances, was a two-time pitcher of the year selection and developed into an All-American award winner in her final season with the Tigers.
She was a bronze medal recipient at the World Cup and Junior Pan Am games with the Canadian Juniors in 2019. In summer 2022, she was named to the Canadian National Team roster and competed with the team at the 2022 Celebration Tour and Canada Cup International Softball Championship.
"Sam (Ryan) is an extremely talented pitcher who throws the ball with good velocity and spins the ball very well," Glasco said. "But what really has me excited is how hard she works and how competitive she is in games.
"Pitching with the Canadian National Team is providing her invaluable international experience," Glasco added. "She is an outstanding student and is a very athletic player for her position. We are extremely excited about the addition of Sam to our roster."
A product of Monroe-Woodbury (New York) High School, Ryan produced immediately for ChattState with a 17-3 record, 1.32 ERA and 123 strikeouts over 21 appearances (18 starts) covering 122-1/3 innings during the 2021 season. She was named the Tennessee Community College Athletics Association's Pitcher of the Year and was selected MVP of the conference tournament.
She followed up with an equally impressive performance for ChattState in the spring 2022 campaign, posting a 23-5 record and a 1.35 ERA while generating 204 strikeouts over 176-2/3 innings pitched.
A repeat winner of the TAAC Pitcher of the Year award and first team All-American selection, Ryan led the Tigers to a return trip to the NJCAA Division I National Championship tournament highlighted by a complete game shutout hurled against College of Southern Idaho in the first round and later a win that vaulted the team into the final four.
Ryan, whose mother Tammy is from Edmonton, acquired dual citizenship prior to her junior season at Monroe-Woodbury HS and earned her spot on the 2019 Canadian Juniors team following the selection camp in Fort Myers, Florida.
She started a team-high five games in the pitching circle at the U-19 Women's Softball World Cup in Irvine, California in August 2019, limiting foes to 19 hits over 23-1/3 innings and recorded 18 strikeouts. She finished 2-1 with a 2.70 ERA and was the starting pitcher in the bronze medal-clinching win over Australia.
In October 2019, Ryan was once again solid in the pitcher's circle for Canada, allowing only one run on five hits and striking out three batters in six innings of work to earn the win in the bronze medal contest of the U17 Women's Pan American Softball Championship.
Last June, in an appearance with the Canadian National Team in Oshawa, Ontario, Canada, Ryan struck out five in 3.1 innings pitched for the Canadians against the Netherlands.
Ryan is the second signee for Louisiana Softball during the currently active national signing period for the 2023-24 academic year, joining Lafayette's own Gabbie Stutes of St. Thomas More Catholic High School who signed an NLI back in November 2022.
The three-time defending Sun Belt regular season and tournament champion Ragin' Cajuns (47-13, 23-4 SBC in 2022) are currently in their sixth season under Glasco's guidance and are coming off the program's 23rd consecutive 40-win season and NCAA Tournament appearance. Louisiana officially begins play in the 2023 season the weekend of February 10-12 with the 37th Annual Louisiana Classics at Yvette Girouard Field at Lamson Park.
