Hicks Honored with Sun Belt Volleyball Defensive Player of the Week Award

LAFAYETTE – Louisiana Volleyball's sophomore middle blocker Cami Hicks was named the Sun Belt Conference's Defensive Player of the Week following her dominant performance on the frontline at the TCU Horned Frog Invitational, the conference office announced on Tuesday (September 20, 2022).

Hicks totaled 15 blocks over seven sets, averaging 2.1 per set, to lead Louisiana's defense in an undefeated run through the Horned Frog Invitational from September 16-17 in Fort Worth, Texas.

Her efforts paced the Ragin' Cajuns as they out-blocked the opposition 25-14 and limited foes to a .058 hitting percentage during the two-match stay in Fort Worth.

Hicks had a hand in six blocks (1 BS, 5 BA) in the straight sets sweep of Alabama, the program's first win over an SEC team since 2001, and followed up with a career-high tying nine blocks (1 BS, 8 BA) in the win over Abilene Christian.

The weekend performance vaulted Hicks into the team lead with 38 total blocks. For the season, the Carthage, Texas product is averaging right at one block per set (1.03) and is currently tied for fifth place in the Sun Belt with teammate Kara Barnes.

It's the first career weekly award from the Sun Belt for Hicks.

She's the second Ragin' Cajun to claim the conference's defensive award in the 2022 season, joining Barnes who picked up the honor back on August 30 after the Michigan State Spartan Invitational.

Hicks and her teammates travel to Troy, Alabama this week to begin Sun Belt Conference play with a two-match series against the Trojans set for Thursday-Friday, September 22-23.

Louisiana (6-3) and Troy (6-6) are slated to meet at 6:00 p.m. (CDT) both nights from the Trojan Arena. The matches are being broadcast on ESPN+.
