Barnes Awarded Season’s First SBC Volleyball Defensive Player of the Week

Powered Louisiana’s frontline efforts with 19 total blocks at MSU Spartan Invitational
LAFAYETTE – Louisiana Volleyball's junior middle blocker Kara Barnes is the recipient of the first Sun Belt Conference Defensive Player of the Week award for the 2022 season, the conference office announced on Tuesday (August 30, 2022).
Barnes provided a formidable presence at the net for Louisiana (2-1) on Opening Weekend. She had a hand in at least four blocks each match and totaled 19 blocks (1.46/set) over three matches at the MSU Spartan Invitational in East Lansing, Mich.
Barnes' 19 total blocks rank 10th nationally after one week of play. The total also represents the most blocks she's recorded during the Opening Weekend of a season in her collegiate career.
The highlight of her performance came on Friday (August 26) when she posted at least seven blocks in both matches, producing 15 blocks on the day.
Barnes picked up five of her weekend single-match high of eight blocks vs. Eastern Michigan over the final two sets, as Louisiana completed the comeback for the reverse sweep victory. She followed up the EMU performance with seven blocks later that evening vs. Michigan State.
It's the first career weekly award from the Sun Belt for Barnes. She's the first Ragin' Cajun to claim the SBC Defensive Player of the Week award since Hannah Ramirez back on Sept. 8, 2020.
Barnes and her teammates are set to play their first home matches of the 2022 season over Labor Day Weekend during the Sawyer Camillo Memorial Classic from Friday-Saturday, September 2-3 in Earl K. Long Gym.
Play begins at 9:00 a.m. on Friday (Sept. 2) as Louisiana meets NDSU in its 2022 home opener. For the complete tournament schedule visit the tournament central page.
