Reverse Sweep Works Against Louisiana in Bout With Michigan State

8/26/2022 10:53:00 PM | Volleyball

Every set in the topsy-turvy contest decided by four points or less

EAST LANSING, Mich. – For the second time on the Opening Day of the 2022 season the Louisiana Ragin' Cajuns Volleyball team was involved in a reverse sweep match, this time falling short in a 3-2 (25-23, 25-23, 23-25, 22-25, 11-15) setback to Michigan State on Friday, August 26 in the Auto Owners Insurance Spartan Invitational at the Breslin Center.

Earlier in the day, Louisiana (1-1) stormed back from a 2-0 deficit to claim a season-opening win (21-25, 17-25, 25-21, 25-22, 15-13) over Eastern Michigan.

The Ragin' Cajuns outlasted the Spartans (1-0) through 23 ties and nine lead changes in claiming a 2-0 match lead. Twice it was Mya Wilson landing set point with a kill at 24-23 to prevent MSU from forcing extra points.

Louisiana had Michigan State backed into a corner in the third set, holding a 23-22 lead. However, a service error and reception error gave the hosts lead and they capitalized by collecting a kill for the set point which extended the match.

The Spartans wouldn't face a deficit in the fourth set, then in the decisive fifth set used a pair of blocks during a critical 3-0 run to assert control at 13-8.

Friday's match marked the first meeting between the two programs since 1991. It was also the first-ever matchup on either school's campus.

LEADING THE RAGIN' CAJUNS
Celeste Darling produced a team-high 14 kills while Kelsey Bennett (12 kills) and Wilson (10 kills) reached double figures for the second time on the day.

Three Ragin' Cajuns posted at least five blocks: Kara Barnes (7), Cami Hicks (7) and Wilson (5).

Jordan Valley closed out the first day of her Homecoming trip (from nearby Haslett) with a team-high tying 14 digs. Coco Gillett matched her total and Bennett picked up 13 digs to collected her second double-double of the day.

Setters Siena DeCambra and Reka Kotorman handed out 20-plus assists each for a second straight outing, finishing with 27 and 23, respectively.
