Louisiana Men’s Basketball Falls to Georgia State in Sun Belt Championship Game

3/7/2022 11:17:00 PM | Men's Basketball

PENSACOLA, Fla. – Sophomore forward Jordan Brown and junior guard Greg Williams, Jr. combined for 39 points, but the dual effort was not enough for Louisiana Men's Basketball to overtake Georgia State as the Ragin' Cajuns fell 80-71 in the 2022 Sun Belt Championship game Monday night at Bay Center Arena.

Williams, Jr. and Brown were named to the conference's all-tournament team following the conclusion of the tournament.

The junior rounded out his state line with five rebounds and a steal while the sophomore notched eight boards and dished a trio of assists.

Williams, Jr. totaled 12+ points in the final five contests of the year.

Jalen Dalcourt capped off his tournament run with 10 points and three rebounds. The Lafayette, La. native tallied 10+ in six of the final nine games during his junior campaign.

It was a tightly contested contest following the opening tip as the Panthers clung to a 13-11 lead with just over six minutes elapsed. Starting the second game of his career, Michael Thomas converted a pair of layups while Brown recorded five points in the early stretch.

With three minutes remaining in the half, Georgia State had extended its advantage to 10, but back-to-back buckets by Brown cut the Louisiana deficit.

The Panthers added a 3-pointer before the break and led 42-33 following the first 20 minutes.

Throughout the latter half, Louisiana tried relentlessly to find a spark and even the score, but each attempt was met with an answer by Georgia State. The teams exchanged triples on four straight possessions early in the final frame. Freshman Kentrell Garnett and Williams, Jr. converted beyond the arc for the Cajuns.

Trailing 55-48 nearing the 10-minute mark, Louisiana went on a quick 6-0 run that sliced the deficit to three.
The Ragin' Cajuns were unable to convert on their next possession which was followed by a 10-3 Panthers run.

Louisiana continued to battle down the stretch, but Georgia State was efficient at the free-throw to preserve the separation.
