LAFAYETTE – Riding a two-game win streak after a pair of midweek victories, the Louisiana Ragin' Cajuns Baseball team faces future Sun Belt Conference rival Southern Miss for a three-game series beginning Friday at M.L. "Tigue" Moore Field at Russo Park.
First pitch for Friday's game is scheduled for 6 p.m. with Saturday's game slated for 2 and Sunday's finale at 1. The final two games of the series will be streamed live on ESPN+ with all three games available in the Lafayette area on KPEL 96.5 FM and RaginCajuns.com.
The weekend series is being sponsored by The Best Stop while also being recognized as Louisiana Salutes. All military service members can claim two (2) free tickets with a valid military ID for any of the three games. Tickets can be picked up at the Cajundome Ticket Office or Russo Park Ticket Office.
Louisiana (5-4) opened the month of March with a pair of midweek victories over in-state rival Northwestern State, claiming an 11-8 win over the Demons in Natchitoches on Tuesday before earning a 6-3 win on Wednesday at Russo Park. Carson Roccaforte, Tyler Robertson and Will Veillon led an offensive charge which hit .290 during the season while stealing 13 bases.
Drew Shifflet and Peyton Havard each earned their first career wins in a Louisiana uniform in the series while Jacob Schultz earned the save in both contests. Louisiana's pitching staff recorded a combined 30 strikeouts in both contests, including 14 looking.
Roccaforte leads Louisiana at the plate with a .407 average with one home run, 14 RBI and six stolen bases. Veillon (.313-0-1), Robertson (.250-0-4), Connor Kimple (.250-3-10) and freshman Kyle DeBarge (.242-0-4) follow in the Ragin' Cajuns attack.
Louisiana will send right-hander Tommy Ray (0-1, 4.50 ERA) to the mound for his second career start while Southern Miss (6-2) will counter with right-hander Ben Ethridge (1-0, 2.45 ERA). The starter for Louisiana in Saturday's contest will be determined with the Golden Eagles sending right-hander Hunter Riggins (2-0, 0.82 ERA) to the hill.
The series finale will see right-hander Jeff Wilson (0-0, 4.00 ERA) on the mound for Louisiana with Southern Miss starting right-hander Hurston Waldrep (1-0, 0.87 ERA).
Southern Miss opened the season with a three-game sweep of North Alabama before taking two of three from Jacksonville State in a weekend series. The Golden Eagles dropped a 13-inning contest at home to South Alabama on Feb. 22 and are coming off a 7-1 victory over defending national champion Mississippi State on Wednesday at Trustmark Park in Pearl, Miss.
Reece Ewing (.464-2-7), Slade Wilks (.385-0-8) and Rodrigo Montenegro (.385-0-4) lead a USM team that posts a .284 team average at the plate.
