Louisiana Climbs Into Top 40 of ITA Men's Tennis Rankings

At No. 39, the Ragin' Cajuns are the highest ranked among state schools and all Sun Belt teams
LAFAYETTE - The Louisiana Ragin' Cajuns Men's Tennis team, winner's of nine straight matches and off to the program's best start in the 2000s era, has moved inside the Top 40 of the ITA Collegiate Tennis Division I Men's National Rankings released on Wednesday, Feb. 23.
The Ragin' Cajuns (10-1) moved up two spots to No. 39 after a three-match run to the H-E-B Tournament of Champions title, Feb. 18-19 in Corpus Christi, Texas, that included quality wins over ETSU and UTSA.
In the newly released rankings, Louisiana stands as the highest ranked team among state schools and within the Sun Belt Conference.
Back in the rankings for the first time since the 2020 season, It's the program's highest ranking since reaching No. 47 back in 2012.
During the active nine-match winning streak, which began back on Jan. 28 at Cajun Courts, the Ragin' Cajuns have claimed wins over No. 50 Texas Tech, No. 62 UTSA and No. 65 Rice. It's the longest winning streak since the 2014 season - the last time the program appeared in the NCAA Tournament.
Louisiana is off to its best start in the 2000s era and has done so under the guidance of first-year head coach Luc Godin. Outstanding performances in singles competition has been the hallmark of the team's success so far, most recently finishing 12-4 in singles play to claim the H-E-B Tournament of Champions title. For the season, the Ragin' Cajuns stand at 40-17 in singles play as a group.
Individually, the play of Oriol Fillat Gimenez has sparked the stretch of winning as he stands 9-1 on the season at No. 3 singles and clinched the wins over ETSU and UTSA at the H-E-B Tournament of Champions. While Fillat Gimenez has won eight straight in singles play, teammate Alejandro Sanchez Gonzalez (7-2 at singles No. 2) has won five straight of his own including wins in the ETSU and UTSA matches that kept the Ragin' Cajuns track for the H-E-B title. At the No. 1 position, Karlo Kajin has held his own as well sporting a 4-3 mark while extending play long enough for the remainder of the group to clinch matches.
UP NEXT FOR LOUISIANA
No. 39 Louisiana finishes its February-long stretch of matches on the road by traveling to Hattiesburg, Miss., on Saturday, Feb. 26 for a 1 p.m. meeting with Southern Miss at the USM Tennis Complex.
The match with the Golden Eagles marks the Ragin' Cajuns final stop before returning home to Cajun Courts on Saturday, March 5 for the Sun Belt Conference opener against Coastal Carolina.
