Paced Louisiana’s offense on Opening Weekend in extra base hits and RBI
LAFAYETTE – Louisiana's Taylor Roman received the first Sun Belt Conference Softball Player of the Week award of the 2022 season following an Opening Weekend performance that saw her produce a team-leading three triples and eight RBI in leading the Ragin' Cajuns to a 5-0 start.
The award, announced by the conference office on Tuesday (Feb. 15, 2022), is the first weekly conference honor of Roman's career. It's also the first for a Ragin' Cajun since March 2020 (Raina O'Neal).
Roman, who had four of her six hits over the weekend go for extra bases, batted .462 and slugged 1.154 in her first weekend back returning from a 2021 season-ending injury.
She picked up at least one hit and posted at least one RBI in all four appearances, and posted a triple in three consecutive games to start the season.
Her three triples and slugging percentage led all Sun Belt players in the first weekend of the season.
The highlight of the weekend was a triple, home run and four RBI in Louisiana's dominant 23-0 win against UAB last Friday. On Saturday, she had the big hit in the four-run third inning that put away North Texas when she laced a two-run triple to center field.
Louisiana now owns 94 Sun Belt Player of the Week awards in program history.
Louisiana, ranked as high as No. 15 by Softball America, continues its season-opening, seven-game homestand at Yvette Girouard Field at Lamson Park on Tuesday (Feb. 15) hosting in-state foe Nicholls (1-3) at 6 p.m.
