19th-ranked Ragin' Cajuns score a Glasco-era record 23 runs in nightcap
LAFAYETTE - The 19th-ranked Louisiana Ragin' Cajuns Softball team began Year No. 5 of the Gerry Glasco era capturing a 2-0, 23-0 (5 inn.) doubleheader sweep of UAB on Friday, Feb. 11 in the 36th Annual Louisiana Classics at Yvette Girouard Field at Lamson Park.
Louisiana's pitching staff scattered five hits over 12 innings in notching back-to-back shutouts of the visiting Blazers. After a pitcher's duel to start the day, the offense showed off its power-hitting potential by generating nine extra base hits - which included five home runs - in the nightcap.
Kandra Lamb and Meghan Schorman combined for a four-hit shutout in Game 1 and Kramer Eschete provided all the offense necessary with a two-run double in the second inning. Lamb led the way in the circle with five scoreless innings, and Schorman completed the shutout with a pair of scoreless innings for the save.
In Game 2, the Ragin' Cajuns (2-0) would score multiple runs in every at bat leading to the most runs scored by the program in the Glasco era.Â
First-inning home runs from Sophie Piskos and Karly Heath led to Louisiana racing out to a 5-0 lead after its first at bat. In the second inning the Ragin' Cajuns collected four extra base hits leading to six more runs, capped off freshman Alexa Langeliers' first collegiate home run which was a three-run blast that extended the lead to 11-0.
Langeliers homered again in the third inning as part of another six-run inning and would add an RBI double in the fourth inning to push her game-high RBI total to six.
Schorman started and zipped through the first two innings without a hit or base runner allowed. Freshman pitcher Sam Landry, the No. 4-rated recruit from the Class of 2021 by Extra Inning Softball, made her collegiate debut in the circle working scoreless frames in the third and fourth inning, finishing by retiring the final five batters she faced. Vanessa Foreman retired the Blazers in order in the fifth inning.Â
