Ortego shoots 8-under-63 as Louisiana sets team record for individual round, 54-hole total
LAHAINA, Hawaii – Eli Ortego posted a school-record 8-under-par 63 to vault up 25 spots on the individual leaderboard and the Louisiana Ragin' Cajuns posted school-records for the lowest team round and 54-hole total to wrap up play on Sunday at the Ka'anapali Classic Collegiate Invitational at Royal Ka'anapali Golf Club.
Louisiana, which wrapped up the fall portion of its 2022-23 schedule, posted a school-record round of 17-under-par 267 and finished in a four-way tie for fourth place with a 54-hole school record score of 830.
The Ragin' Cajuns finished tied with Colorado, East Tennessee and Kansas for fourth in the 20-team field, which was won by No. 11-ranked Oklahoma at 811. Clemson (823) and Liberty (826) finished ahead of Louisiana with three teams in the GolfStat Top 50 – No. 40 Ole Miss (832), No. 20 Georgia (833) and No. 29 North Florida (834) finishing behind the Ragin' Cajuns.
Ortego, who finished one stroke ahead of the previous school-record set by Philipp Fendt (2011), Fernando Cruz Valle (2014) and Peter Hinnant (2021), finished ninth overall as he recorded a bogey-free round.
The sophomore opened the day with a birdie at No. 7 and posted an eagle at No. 9 to make the turn at 3-under-par. Ortego then birdied four of the first six holes to begin the back nine before moving to 8-under after sinking a birdie at No. 1.
Charlie Flynn recorded a career-low round for Louisiana, posting a 6-under-65 – tied for the fifth-lowest score in school history while Jake Marler joined Ortego and Flynn with a 2-under-69.
Flynn finished at 6-under-207 for the event – four strokes better than his previous 54-hole total (211) set at last year's Quail Valley Collegiate Invitational.
Freshman Malan Potgieter added a 1-under-70 for Louisiana and finished with a 54-hole low score of 3-under-210 while Hudson Dubinski fired a 3-over 74 to finish at 216.
Louisiana will return to action when it opens the spring portion of its schedule on Feb. 13-14, 2023 at the Mobile Bay Intercollegiate. The event will be the first of seven spring events for Louisiana, which will host a pair of tournaments – the Lake Las Vegas Intercollegiate on Feb. 28-March 1 in Henderson, Nevada, and the annual Louisiana Classics on March 13-14 at Oakbourne Country Club.
